Despite all the time people are spending indoors and on YouTube this year, the company is forgoing its annual YouTube Rewind because "2020 has been different," the company said in November. Still, YouTube isn't closing out the year silently, releasing its yearly list of the site's top trending videos in the United States. This year, "Dave Chappelle's "8:46,"":https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/subcultures/dave-chappelles-846 the comedian's poignant half-hour special about police brutality and racism in America, topped the YouTube's trending list. It's probably the first and only time a Netflix release will top YouTube's trending charts.

"8:46" appeared, without prior announcement or fanfare on YouTube, of all places, on June 11th. Since then, it's garnered more than 29 million views. The special is named after the amount of time former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on George Floyd's neck, killing Floyd and sparking months of protests around the country.

"More than anything else, it sets the tone for how there was this thing that was happening in culture and in the world, and how people created content that reflected this moment that was happening," Earnest Pettie, an analyst on YouTube’s culture and trends team, told The Verge.

Other videos appearing in the list include Saturday Night Live's "First Debate Cold Open," John Krasinski's "Some Good News" and Dream's "Minecraft Speedrunner VS 3 Hunters GRAND FINALE." Dream, whose "Speedrunner vs. 3 Hunters Grand Finale" amassed more than 51 million views this year, was named YouTube's Top Breakout Creator, with 12 million subscribers. Dream also hit number two on the Top Creators list, but MrBeast and his 46 million subscribers edged him out.

Much of the list is, more or less, a who's who of viral personalities. Charli and Dixie D'Amelio reached five and seven, respectively on the Top Creators chart. Jeffree Starr's "We Broke Up" video, boosted by 33 million views, reached number three on the Top Trending videos list. David Dobrik rounded out the top ten with "We Can't Believe This Happened," which might be the most "YouTube" title of all time.
