A potential bombshell political story not related to the United States Presidential Election dropped last night, when British tabloid The Sun reported that Vladimir Putin is planning to resign early in 2021 due to possible Parkinson's concerns.

The Sun claimed that "Moscow sources" stated that recent footage of Putin suggested that some physical tics were indicators of Parkinson's disease. Speculation was fuelled further when Putin began working to get a legal measure making him immune to prosecution after his reign ends through Russian government.

The one named source The Sun cited was Moscow political scientist Professor Valery Solovei, who noted that Putin's family was pressuring him to resign from office. Solovei has been saying Putin is on the verge of resigning for years, setting the timeline between 2020 and 2024 in previous interviews, so he may be vindicated.

However, the Russian government has denied the rumor. Putin's press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, said Putin was in "excellent health" and "is not going to resign," though that must be taken with a grain of salt.

As the news broke through Twitter last night, multiple users had the surreal experience of learning about the story through a Twitter post that was also celebrating the canonization of "Destiel," a ship in the Supernatural fandom between characters Dean and Castiel that is arguably one of the most legendary ships for old Tumblr users in the early 2010s. The original tweet has since been deleted, but its shockwaves were felt throughout Twitter for the night.

2020 continues to be an unprecedented level of wild.

Putin has spent so much of his time in office securing his own power and building his own cult of personality, so when he either steps down or stays in the job until he dies the changeover to his successor will be a mess.

There would be no way the Russian government would admit it, even if it was true. It would cause complete chaos on the streets. Russians, dread political chaos as it's been a dark staple on Russian history. Indeed, many Russians today, those born in the 80s, 90s, who grew up in that era remember the turbulent final years of USSR, and the horrible decade of the 90s until Putin took the reigns and brought Russia back into the fore front of the world. Besides the people, his resignation or even semblence of retreat from power opens the government up to a mass slew of would-be-oligarch-in-chef. Putin's popularity is waning. 5 Years of shrinking economy, stagnation, bad international deals (cough cough Khitai) has already created a breeding ground for a wide variety of factions that are just itching for 2024 – when Putin terms are up. Even if Putin wants to go, there are vested powers within his own administration that may force him to stay.

If Putin really steps down, I have to say this is the most unexpected 2020 turn… but then again Sherlock season 5 is a close second…
