Ever since Gavin, the nephew of Vine star Nick Mastodon, made his first appearance on the short-form video service back in 2013, his iconic facial expressions have been used as reaction images and GIFs around the web. While Vine may be long gone, Gavin’s relatable emotions have remained relevant in meme culture.

Earlier this week, Gavin and his family decided to join in on the recent meme NFT craze with the first crypto-collectible based on one of his most well-known memes: Selfie in the Stands.

We caught up with Gavin and his family this week to learn more about why they decided to get in on the NFT hype, and they told us the sheer interest in crypto art made it seem like a good way to help him in the years to come.

“We've been getting a ton of interest from people actually asking us about Gavin NFTs,” they said. “We felt we needed to do some research, and ultimately decided that it was a nice way to contribute to Gavin's future.”

At the time of many of his famous Vines, Gavin was only a few years old, but since then, Gavin has continued to build a following online all over the world and he’s particularly popular in China.

With a starting price set at 3 ETH (Ethereum) on the crypto art platform Foundation, Gavin and his family are hoping to contribute to the young internet star’s future with proceeds from the upcoming auction.

“We are currently listed on Foundation, auctioning the token of Gavin's Selfie in the Stands,” they told us. “What many people don't know is that Gavin actually took the photo himself, which is why it is such a special photo. Once the reserve price of 3 Ether has been met, a 24-hour auction will begin.”

When asked what the recent digital art movement in NFTs means to them and what their hopes are for Gavin’s crypto-collectibles, his family said, “We joined the trend because of an abundance of interest, and figured it would be a good way to contribute to Gavin's future. But we think it's really special that the blockchain will allow these memes to last forever.”

When asked if they plan to do more Gavin-related NFTs in the future, his family told us, "Wait and see. :)"
