With twelve days left until the end of the Donald Trump presidency, Twitter has permanently suspended his account. Twitter cited "risk of further incitement of violence" as the reason.

The unprecedented move comes days after the storming of the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters. Trump had given a fiery speech that appeared to egg on his supporters hours prior to the catastrophe. While his supporters swarmed the building, he used his Twitter account to give a half-hearted condemnation of the riot, telling his supporters "We love you, you're very special" while urging them to go home.

Twitter suspended Trump's account for twelve hours after the incident while Facebook, YouTube and Twitch suspended his accounts indefinitely. In a blog post further explaining their decision, Twitter cited two tweets Trump made since coming back from his suspension that they believed posed risk of further violence. The tweets read:

“The 75,000,000 great American Patriots who voted for me, AMERICA FIRST, and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, will have a GIANT VOICE long into the future. They will not be disrespected or treated unfairly in any way, shape or form!!!”

And:

“To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th.”

According to Twitter, these tweets, "must be read in the context of broader events in the country and the ways in which the President’s statements can be mobilized by different audiences, including to incite violence, as well as in the context of the pattern of behavior from this account in recent weeks."

"After assessing the language in these Tweets against our Glorification of Violence policy," wrote Twitter, "we have determined that these Tweets are in violation of the Glorification of Violence Policy and the user @realDonaldTrump should be immediately permanently suspended from the service."

Twitter is arguing that Trump's tweets could be received by his supporters that his election loss is not legitimate and that his announcement he will not attend the inauguration may be a signal to his supporters that the inauguration is a "safe" target for an attack, as he will not be there.

The move stunned Twitter users, many of whom had been clamoring for such action throughout his Presidency, though many felt it too little too late.

Others fired off jokes "commemorating" the loss of Trump's Twitter account.

Trump had 88 million followers when Twitter suspended his account.

Nine days into 2021 and we already have the first unperson of the decade.

Well this is a worrying precident. 9 days and this is already shaping up to be a terrible decade for democracy.

Bullshit. He already broken the ToS of twitter dozens of times. Anyone else would have already been banned, but he got special treatment because he is the president.

This has zero to do with democracy.

Unrestricted corporate meddling in public discourse is good because muh TOS. I hope those boots you're suckling on taste good.

If they can and will censor the President of the United States- citing incitement when he was actually begging for the opposite- there is nothing stopping them from censoring anyone, anywhere, at any time.

Anyone celebrating this is not thinking beyond today. And they're not thinking about how close we are to becoming China.

“I know your pain. I know you’re hurt. We had an election that was stolen from us. It was a landslide election and everyone knows it. Especially the other side. But you have to go home now. Go home, we love you. You’re very special."

"These are the things and events that happen when a sacred landslide election victory is so unceremoniously & viciously stripped away from great patriots who have been badly & unfairly treated for so long. Go home with love & in peace. Remember this day forever."

There's hardly any content at all about stopping, much less what any person would characterize as begging.

"citing incitement when he was actually begging for the opposite"

Yea, let's just ignore the fact he spend the last 6 months convincing half the country their election was stolen by communists and all the firing speeches about "storming the gates" and "taking back their country".

Want to know what would have never happened without Trump? What happened on January 6th.

Hmm, you sound like some of the Taiwanese who will spread wild conspiracy theory to me.
Not saying you are one of them tho.

This development in itself isn't too surprising or upsetting, but the really infuriating thing is the positive reactions to it being the top-trending topic of the entire site right now.

Google banned Parler. Apple to follow suit.

They really think sweeping this under the rug is going to make these people go away?

I mean about a million different fucking accounts deleted themselves out of existence yesterday with messages to the effect of "Fuck this SJW-ass website I'm out".

So… yeah. It kind of IS making them go away.

No, but deplatforming extremists is a start. Should have happened years ago. Giving them free-roam is exactly what led it spread.

And letting it continue to roam freely would only make it worst. They are openly fascist at this point, or whatever you want to call their far-right extremist movement, don't care. Go to the Donald if you don't believe it. They frequently spit on democracy and call for the execution of their enemies.

I wonder who get's to define what extremism is these days. I guess as long as the corporations are on your side you don't have to worry about ever being tied to it.
BTW Democracy has a lot of faults, and some of those faults are going to come front and center. Very very soon.
I mentioned it before, and I'll mention it again. By 2040, 30% of the population will have control over 70% of the Senate.

About damn time

Are you also glad that, around the same time, Facebook banned and erased the entire #WalkAway movement?

No incitement to violence. Simply people deciding not to be Democrats anymore. And not just locked out, everything was removed.

Think beyond just Trump.

On the one hand I'm worried about the public's increasing acceptance of censoring discordant opinions on social media, thus enabling corporations to have more control on the direction of conversations. But on the other hand the man has increasingly drifted away from represented what I wanted and has only been a divisive force on domestic issues. Twitter's assessment is dicey but we've had political violence arise from less.

For now I'll just enjoy knowing there won't be another Trump twitter meme for a looooong time.

Give it time. We could always see memes parodying or mocking trump.
