(Horizon Zero Dawn / Twitter)

The dream of next-generation graphics has always been to most accurately recreate the real world on the computer. Sometimes, gamers, be careful what you wish for.

Recently, Twitter users rallied together to dunk on an angry gamer upset that Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn and the upcoming Horizon Forbidden West (releasing this Friday) has peach fuzz on her face like a normal human woman, though the user called it "a beard."

Many women (and men) have a little bit of hair on their face, called vellus hair or "peach fuzz." It's often thin and translucent, making it barely noticeable to the human eye.

Of course, this isn't the first time Aloy has been the target of gamer ire, as many expressed the Horizon Zero Dawn protagonist in the sequel Forbidden West appears too masculine compared with her first iteration. This led to a swarm of controversy last May over her redesign that left many people with negative impressions of gamers rolling their eyes. @9santy1's tweet revived that sentiment, as seemingly all who came across the translated screenshot of their tweet took a shot at him to the effect of him never having seen a woman.

At the very least, gamers are now aware that humans have vellus hair. For his part, @9santy1 appears to be reveling in the storm he caused, as he's been retweeting articles about the controversy and is now trying to play it off like he baited bozos epic style.

Have these people never heard of vellus hair?

I feel like this is the point where we can say graphics are realistic enough, that we can render the peach fuzz on a human face.

I saw someone on 4chan say "I already don't like women much and you want me to tolerate an ugly one?"
Even as a joke, I think I understand.

Anon really not helping against the stereotype ain’t he? I still can’t help but find it kinda funny 4chan anons will make racist jokes no problem, but make fun of people who display negative nerd/gamer stereotypes and then they get all offended, like they didn’t realize the whole “gamer Joker” thing is supposed to be a joke.

I'm don't think it's fair to say that those people are one and the same. 4chan can sometimes feel like a hivemind, but it's filled with a mix of weirdos.
Even if the things they say are sometimes unagreeable or just incorrect.

Everything is Terrible

I'll admit that it's impressive they were able to render that, but why? I get wanting to be realistic, but that level of detail only works for still images, not something that's going to be moving around a bunch and that you're not even going see up close most of the time.

While it's impossible to know for sure, I suspect that is a still or from a cinematic sequence, not the moment to moment in-game model. A company usually wouldn't waste money and time on that. Of course after size-changing horse balls in RDR2 it's hard to say with certainty.

It is stuff like the "beard" OP why barely anyone takes "Capital G Gamers" seriously.

In my case I'll just do a shitty meme.

Gamers™ circa 2002: We want photorealism!

Gamers™ circa 2022 when photorealism is achieved: Y womanz got tiny face hair?!

Gamers aren't a single entity, just in case you were unsure.

Actually they are. I saw a gamer get run over by a car once and the other ones screamed too. Really weird.

I’m aware, I’m one myself after all. I’m making fun of a specific subset of gamers, hence my use of the phrase “capital G Gamers” and the Gamers™ part. It’s so weird being on a fucking meme documentation site where it seems like some users barely get the stupid jokes i reference, and whenever I make fun of Gamers™ the same people who say “it’s just a joke you over sensitive baby” when it’s a joke about minorities get offended at a innocuous joke about a hobby i myself am a part of.

To be fair, was it really necessary to have that level of detail? I can't imagine it's going to be optimised for mid level gaming gear like that.

If it's a screencap from gameplay, I agree. If it's a still image generated for promotional purposes, I say go nuts with it.

This makes sense for cutscenes. Not so much for gameplay but I imagine the game would use a less detailed model for that.

There is usually a lot of tricks you can add detail without destroying a computer. As long is a good dev team, it should be fine even in game.
