(Nintendo)

When Nintendo announced they'd reveal the next fighter for Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, fans began guessing which one of the long-rumored fighters it would be. Crash Bandicoot? Sora? Well, it turns out that this time around, Nintendo had no time for those schmucks and announced the next fighter is freakin' Sephiroth.

For those unaware, Sephiroth is the antagonist of Final Fantasy VII and one of the most notorious villains in gaming history, thanks in part to his infamous murking of Aerith. The dude's also pure evil; putting Sephiroth in a game alongside cartoony villains like Bowser and King K. Rool is akin to putting Sephiroth in a game alongside Jafar and Captain Hook (okay, bad example).

The reveal trailer sufficiently hypes up Sephiroth's badassery, but that also makes it unintentionally hilarious--this destroyer of worlds will soon be made a fool of by Isabelle's toy slingshot, and Smashers were quick to joke about how bizarre it was to see Sephiroth among the colorful cast of Nintendo mascots.

Others made fun of the moment in the reveal trailer where it looks like Sephiroth straight-up impales Mario.

While Mario has been getting beaten up in many Smash character reveal trailers, him getting seemingly impaled by Sephiroth wasn't random; one Twitter user pointed out the moment, along with much of Sephiroth's reveal, was a reference to his fight with Cloud in the Final Fantsy VII: Advent Children film.

Masahiro Sakurai will give his customary overview of the new fighter and his mechanics on Thursday, December 17th.

I think it's because it's the first time that a character came out that had ZERO rumors about it. It's just so… out of nowhere

Yeah, there are way too many sword characters in Smash. Byleth, Joker, this guy, the DLC have way too many.

Steve is another sword character. The DLC characters certainly have been rather sword user heavy. I mean the Byleth reveal was already parodying it and Sephiroth is the second sword user they've added since it.
