Joe Rogan and Edward Snowedn

Joe Rogan, popular podcaster and DMT Inquisitor, scored one of his biggest gets yet when he was able to hook Edward Snowden for a marathon, 3-hour conversation that covered a wide range of topics.

Snowden talks about what you might expect -- what is life like in exile, why he decided to come forward as a whistleblower, etc. -- but he also offers some poignant and heavy quotes about the modern surveillance state encouraged by the smart phone era. “Whenever you’re carrying a phone, whenever the phone is turned on, there is a record of your presence at that place that is being made and created by companies," he says. "Where were you when you were eight years old, where did you go after you had a bad break up, who did you spend the night with, who did you call after, all of this information used to be ephemeral… but now these things are stored.”

Needless to say, listeners were unnerved by the podcast. Ironically, many took to Twitter to express their shaken nerves about the omnipresence of digital surveillance.

If you can't listen to the entire thing, Uproxx has provided a selection of the podcast's most memorable Snowden quotes. Sounds like a good way to feel depressed about how your entire personhood is being monitored by governments and corporations all the time and there's basically nothing to be done about it!
