The streaming service Spotify and the messaging app Discord, among other platforms, were down for several hours yesterday, spawning a smorgasbord of frustrated memes and tweets as the internet speculated on the outage that affected millions of users.

Some memes addressed the question of what users could do instead of going on Spotify and Discord, offering a variety of alternatives (not all of which were very attractive propositions).

Others captured the raw and intense emotional reaction of internet users to the temporary loss of two usually reliable platforms, expressing their woes through memes.

A few pointed out the convergence of the Spotify and Discord outage with International Women's Day, wondering how the problems with the two apps might relate to the observance of the holiday.

While the true reason for the outage turned out to be a Google Cloud error, which is a service both companies and many more use, there was also much speculation about the goings-on at Spotify and Discord during the outage. But, thankfully, the companies had reliable tech support on the scene, as noted by Twitter user @OddsOnFPL.

Commentary about the spike in activity at other websites was also part of the afternoon’s anguished memery, especially on Twitter, where many of those who had been wasting time on Spotify and Discord prior to the outages went to continue wasting time.

The sudden loss of two pillars of online life sent people around the world into an "emotional" spiral. While the services were only down for about six hours, the reaction to the outage was heated and heavily memed. While short outages like this one have happened in the past, such as the 2018 YouTube outage, it makes one wonder what we would ever do if Spotify, Discord or another prominent website faced an extended outage. Guess we know for certain there will be memes.
