Smash Mouth vocalist Steve Harwell in a music video for 'All Star' / YouTube

Smash Mouth's lead singer, Steve Harwell, has died from liver failure at the age of 56.

On Monday, the band wrote that its founding member and long-time vocalist Steve Harwell, who stepped away in 2021 due to health issues, passed away at his home in Idaho. "Rest in peace knowing you aimed for the stars, and magically hit your target," the band wrote in a eulogy posted to social media.

The sad development arrived just a day after the news that Harwell was given less than a week to live and was receiving hospice care at his home. The lead singer of Smash Mouth, who co-founded the band in 1994 and achieved major success with the hit single "All Star," had struggled with alcoholism and health issues for many years.

The band's most famous song, "All Star," which appeared in the 2001 animated classic Shrek, became the subject of innumerable remixes, parodies and memes in the second half of 2010s as Shrek's cultural impact also reached its peak.

On social media, Smash Mouth fans and all those who has memed 'All Star' to oblivion, shared their fond memories of the band and its frontman.

After Steve Harvell parted ways with the band in 2021, 'Smash Mouth' was joined by vocalist Zach Goode, with whom they have since released a cover of Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up."

I wasn't aware of his health issues until the hospice announcement yesterday, and looking back it explains a lot of his stranger antics over the past few years (e.g. the COVID Twitter feud with Rev from Vinesauce or the live performance that led to his retirement).

Needless to say, while I don't condone or excuse any of the worse stuff that Harwell did, his fate is fucking horrible for anyone to go through, especially given that it all started with his infant son dying of cancer.

Rest in peace. A part of my childhood and teenager years left.

This is so tragic… he still had so much to do, so much to see…

Why couldn't this wait 'til he got older?
