Rumored Cancelation Of 'Velma' Has Social Media Celebrating Scrappy-Doo Killing The Title Character, Ironically Proving Few People Were Keeping Up With It

Velma, the controversial animated TV series created by Mindy Kaling that attempted to "edge up" the classic Scooby-Doo cast and became a social media punching bag in the process, may have been canceled after two seasons.

The rumor comes from an Instagram post by an animator of the series, Davey Cummings, who said, "there will not be a season 3."

After the post made its way through the news aggregators, Cummings deleted it. Discussing Film also deleted its tweet about the story, which suggests that the news might not be true at all, or at the very least not official yet.

Velma was widely reviled on social media at the time of its release but had faded quietly into the background of social media over the following two years.

This may explain the wave of misinformation concerning the "heroics" of the character Scrappy-Doo that have spread on social media throughout today.

In the season two finale, Scrappy-Doo is a murderous serial killer who attacks Velma at a wedding. He kicks her off a balcony, causing Velma to plummet to her death, but is ultimately possessed by Velma's spirit, which causes his own death.

Velma appears in ghost form and the season ends with ghost Velma trying to figure out how to come back to life. The final stinger suggests a spirit is about to drag her to the underworld.

This led to celebrations on social media that Scrappy-Doo, long the target of ire among Scooby-Doo heads, had redeemed himself by killing off a character that had become what some might say is even more loathed.

However ironic it might be for Velma to end, literally and figuratively, at the hands of Scrappy-Doo, it is not the canonical ending of Velma.

Earlier this week, Velma returned for a Halloween special that saw spirit Velma working to return to her body in the 24 hours after her physical death. It didn't look like she and the gang succeeded, and a funeral for Velma was held, but in a final twist, Velma pops out of her coffin alive, though even she doesn't know how it's possible.

That's a mystery that will go unsolved should the rumored cancelation of Velma be accurate, but it does mean that the jokey celebrations about Scrappy-Doo killing Velma are misguided.
