The Roblox Death Sound, best known to the wider internet community as "Oof," is no more. The gaming platform quietly announced yesterday that the iconic "death" sound that has been a staple of the platform and memes since the beta in 2005 has been scrubbed from Roblox due to licensing issues.

While the specifics of what happened with Roblox and its iconic death noise are unclear, some, such as Kotaku, have speculated that a deal Roblox made with Tommy Tallarico (the creator of the sound) has expired or gone sour. Tallarico created the sound for the 2000 FPS Messiah, and entered an agreement with Roblox that any Roblox creator who wanted to use the sound effect would have to pay $1.

Now when you die in Roblox, you die in real life you hear this sound:

The loss of "Oof" was mourned by many on social media, and some campaigned to save it, albeit somewhat sarcastically.

For perhaps the last time, here is the "Oof" in all its glory, gone but not forgotten:

Honestly it's a bit surprising it took a long time for Tommy Tallerico to notice. I'm not too terribly surprised not a lot of people knew the origin of the sound bite because Messiah (and a bunch of other Shiny Entertainment games that aren't Earthworm Jim) is more of a "cult classic" than a huge hit.

I don't know Messiah and I know a shit ton of games.
so I don't know if it's a cult classic, but it's clearly not a well known game.
and I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of people who heard about this game heard it because of roblox.
