Elon Musk, the new head honcho at Twitter, has published a poll asking users whether the social media platform should bring back Vine.

Vine was a video-sharing platform that Twitter shuttered in 2017, reportedly after finding the service challenging to monetize. Although Vines could only be six seconds long, the style of humor and short-form video was a precursor to TikTok, which is now the most popular social media platform around.

Overall, the “Y” option in Musk’s poll appeared to be winning significantly, with almost three million votes counted by this morning.

This is not the first time Musk has consulted the internet to make important decisions either. Musk has posted polls on questions such as an edit button on Twitter in the past, and arguably one of his perceived reasons for buying the platform has to do with being incredibly active on it himself.

Many expressed support for Vine’s possible resurrection, seeing the platform as a more wholesome alternative to TikTok.

Others were opposed to the resurrection of Vine, arguing that a new Vine might spoil their cherished memories of the old Vine, which spawned countless classic memes and viral videos over the years.

The news led many to reminisce about some of their favorite Vines from years past. Many of these are accessible on Know Your Meme, which has recorded many of the most iconic Vines. The legacy of Vine also lives on in YouTube compilations, TikTok compilations and reposts of old Vines all around the internet.

So far, Musk’s time at the head of Twitter has been highly eventful and contentious, with Musk firing many of the company’s top brass and posting about a conspiracy theory regarding the recent attack on Nancy Pelosi’s husband. The poll about Vine seems to steer into less partisan and controversial territory.

I don’t think this is a good idea. It was great in its age, but every social media is trying to copy TikTok with their video format, and bringing back Vine could corrupt it that way. Better to let it rest in piece than bring it back a monster.

I never thought I'd see the day where I'd actually be clamoring for the return of Vine but here we are. At least it would be a competitor to TikTok.

We can also go back to viral videos, like:
“Yo can I get some ice cream?”
“Only a spoonful”
pulls out a comically large spoon
