This may not come as much of a surprise to some, but Truth Social, essentially a Twitter clone seen by many as Donald Trump's attempt to rebuild his social media following after he was banned by Twitter in January 2021, is apparently failing to attract users.

Earlier this week, The Wrap reported that Truth Social, run by former Congressman Devin Nunes, had seen an alarming 93 percent decline in new signups since its rocky launch in February, and has also seen a similar dip in overall usage. In its first week of launch, the app had about 860,000 downloads. That number has now dipped to about 60,000 per week.

Analysts have pointed to several reasons to explain why Truth Social is not turning out to be the conservative behemoth to rival the purportedly "left-wing" Twitter. For starters, its launch was plagued with issues, as several who signed up for the app were shuffled onto a waiting list, and in some cases, it took weeks for them to actually use the website.

Furthermore, Donald Trump himself barely uses the website, which was clearly a major selling point to his followers who missed his Twitter account.

"We live in a world where the Taliban has a huge presence on Twitter, yet your favorite American president has been silenced. This is unacceptable," Trump said before the site's launch. "I’m excited to soon begin sharing my thoughts on TRUTH Social and to fight back against Big Tech."

Those wanting to see Trump's tweet-like thoughts are instead receiving a steady stream of Donald Trump Jr.'s. According to Forbes, the site works well enough, but the issue is that it's largely a ghost town, populated mostly by Don Jr., The Babylon Bee and bots.

The apparent decline of Truth Social was music to the ears of its critics, who predicted that the site would fade into obscurity like other attempts at a "conservative-oriented Twitter" such as Parler and Gettr were labeled in the past.

Clearly, Truth Social needs some shaking up if it wants to live up to its ambitions. Perhaps "Trump" can go back to “truth-ing” Pig Poop Balls?

Pity he won't join Gab.
Unlike truth social, it's been growing explosively since launch.

Finally. An honest to God failure, and not people petitioning and getting Google to pull the rug out from under it and suppress a new site for them.

If you want to be a better Twitter, then just be a better Twitter, don't lean into this "free speech platform" horseshit. I legit think more people would sign up for your site if you rebranded and kept the political angle to a minimum. Have you seen the way Twitter is run? It can't be that hard to surpass them on quality.

Even "Social Media but Better" is fraught with nonstarters like Diaspora. The main reason people stay on a social media site is that's where everyone else is. When an alternative gets made, either you get some early adopters who abandon it when no one else joins, or you get only the people who got booted from the main platform. Most people on Twitter agree it's a hellsite, but short of them banning porn, people will still keep going back to see their friend's tweets and get their daily dopamine hit.

Gee, who would've thought that Truth Social would turn out like all of Trump's other failed businesses? /s
