Patton Oswalt with Dave Chappelle, left, and apology follow-up, right.

Comedian Patton Oswalt had an exciting New Year's Eve, resulting in an ensuing controversy online over the weekend. After finishing a set of his own Friday night, longtime friend Dave Chappelle invited him next door to do a guest set at an arena. Afterward, they took a selfie together, which Oswalt posted on Instagram.

Due to Chappelle's ongoing controversy over alleged transphobic comments that sparked numerous protests at Netflix in 2021, the Instagram post was met with an outpouring of anger from many. Oswalt then posted a long-form apology on his Instagram, but it did little to stymie the backlash — both from those angered by the initial post and those who felt the apology was genuine and were upset that Oswalt would "flip on Chappelle."

A lot of people were upset with Oswalt's apology because they said it "reinforced the cancel culture stereotyping" that many supporters of Chappelle have been talking about for much of last year. This led to people making fun of this thinking and how Oswalt had to apologize for a selfie with Chappelle.

Despite the apology attempt, there were many who were not persuaded by it and instead had an increased fervor in their denouncement of Oswalt, which led to people posting about how they were either upset or ashamed of him, and how the apology itself did not do enough to repair the harm he did with the initial post.

Out of all the noise brought on by this, there were, of course, those who simply took the chance to make jokes of the whole debacle.

Dave kept saying. Over and over again. How the “right opinion” has become more important than genuinely asking questions or just expressing yourself. It’s like once you’re in the spotlight you’re not allowed to be fully human anymore. All I got from Patton’s apology was how much he really wants to be liked by the LGBTQ, I can’t tell if he’s afraid of them, genuinely wants to placate them in every way, or both. I can just feel the tiresome anxiety in the post that he wants them to like him. I feel bad for him honestly.

Cyberbullying, of which cancel culture is a form, needs a globally understood definition criminalizing it, just like murder, rape, robbery, etc.

When that person refers to Chappelle "caus(ing) an enormous amount of damage", what exactly is he referring to? It was my understanding that all he did was make offensive jokes expressing his viewpoints. Who did he specifically harass?

The only thing Chappelle damaged was the narrative surrounding black people being totally subservient to the "woke union"

Trans "women" are delusional men and vice versa.

I and everyone else who subscribes to this viewpoint are allowed to express it, and no one has the right to take it personally.

If cancel culture was a person, first-degree murder would be 100% warranted.

How many posts do you have to make, god damn. This one is just transphobia in the guise freedom of speech support.

Yes you can think that trans people are just delusional and say it, doesn't make you any less transphobic. You're just an asshole, using Dave's argument to say your bullshit.

How is it that you consider a comment like this, going out of the way to rebuke someone's viewpoint, as acceptable when doing the same to correct one's gender expression is obviously uncalled for? They're both the exact same antagonistic sentiment in opposite directions.

In other words, why should I or anyone else respect your side of the gender argument when you are openly hostile to the other side?

Don't negotiate with terrorists, and don't apologize to wokists. Jesus Christ this is getting ridiculous. I puked a little bit in my mouth reading the feminist bullshit in that tweet. These people need to get back on their vibrators and leave the rest of us in peace for a couple hours at least.
