On The Late Betty White's 100th Birthday, Fans Donate To Animal Shelters As Part Of The #BettyWhiteChallenge
On what would have been Betty White's 100th birthday today, fans of the actress are donating to animal shelters in droves as part of the hashtag campaign "Betty White Challenge."
On the eve of her passing, Twitter user Lisa Powell suggested that on January 17th, fans should donate money to a local animal shelter in honor of the late celebrity. White was a famous lover of animals throughout her lifetime and worked with the American Humane organization for more than 60 years.
Let’s all donate something to your local animal shelter on Betty’s birthday on January 17th in her honor! It’s the least we can do to still celebrate & honor Betty’s love of animals!! #RIPBetty #BettyWhite #ripbettywhite #BettyWhiteChallenge #BettyWhiteDay https://t.co/R6JqdFI8hF

It's unclear if Powell's tweet inspired the birth of the #BettyWhiteChallenge, but the idea soon lead a flood of social media users to announce their participation by donating to animal shelters across the United States.
I'm going to participate in the #BettyWhiteChallenge by donating to @AmericanHumane.For every 50 likes this tweet gets, I'll donate an additional $5, up to a maximum total gift of $50.#GoldenGirls#BettyWhite pic.twitter.com/aaxxrp7xD5

Betty White was an animal advocate all her life. If all of Betty's fans donated just $3.00 to an animal rescue, imagine how many animals would be saved in honor of Betty White.#BettyWhiteRIP #BettyWhiteChallenge #bettywhiteforever #2021toastBettyWhite#animals#DonateforBetty pic.twitter.com/tJemRn4dtd

It remains to be seen how impactful the #BettyWhiteChallenge will be for animal shelters across the country, though it looks like it will be a boon.
“I’ve had many conversations with Betty about animal welfare, and I know she’s looking down from heaven and really smiling,” American Humane leader Robin Ganzert said about the internet challenge. "She’ll be smiling on her birthday, and she’ll be smiling about the lives she’s changed."

Finally! A social media challenge that actually does some good in the world!
We could do with more "donate to a good charity" challenges. Better than setting yourself on fire or sticking a sharp rod in your urethra or whatever else Tik Tokers do these days.
