A lengthy Nintendo Direct dropped yesterday, and while Nintendo once again disappointed fans hoping for a crumb of news on hotly anticipated games like Breath of the Wild 2, Hollow Knight: Silksong and Metroid Prime 4, the Direct was generally well-received by the notoriously fickle Nintendo fanbase. Why? Because Nintendo totally freakin' Coconut Malled everyone.

Okay, granted, that wasn't the only reason people were excited, but it was part of it. Nintendo announced a massive DLC package of 48 remastered old Mario Kart tracks coming to Mario Kart 8, including Coconut Mall, the classic course with the unforgettable soundtrack. The DLC package can be purchased for $25.

Apart from memers getting war flashbacks to the "Coconut Mall" trend of 2020, the Direct also gave memers a brand new meme in Mouthful Mode Kirby, a feature of the upcoming Kirby and the Forgotten Land in which the lovable pink ball can partially consume objects and take on their function. Naturally, the potential for memes was instantly noticed by Nintendo fans, who can actually play the game when it releases on March 25th.

While the memes from yesterday's Direct flowed, some gamers were actually excited for the games shown in the Direct. Major attention grabbers include Mario Strikers Battle League, a sequel to the underrated sports title Super Mario Strikers, which came out on the Gamecube many years ago. The nostalgia was intense for gamers with fond memories of the surprisingly competitive Mario soccer game. Mario Strikers: Battle League comes out on June 10th.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 took top billing at the Direct with a trailer that excited fans of the growing hit franchise. The game will release in September.

The Direct also proved a boon for old JRPG fans, as ports of two Earthbound games (and no, not that one) became available on the Switch after the Direct, and Chrono Cross is coming April 7th.

No Man's Sky, the Ezio trilogy of Assassin's Creed, both Portal games and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed rounded out the list of ports coming to the Switch.

Nintendo also announced an upcoming Warriors -style game with the case of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, gave an update on Advance Wars (now coming out April 8th) and announced a Wii Sports successor in Nintendo Switch Sports.

Overall, the Direct was generally well-received by memers and gamers alike, as it provided much new content to feast upon. At the very least, it quieted the fanbase's ever-present frustration with Nintendo for the time being.
