Nintendo

Nintendo surprised Zelda fans earlier today by announcing Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, a new game in the Hyrule Warriors series that takes place 100 years before the events of Breath of the Wild.

The game appears to take place during the "Great Calamity," a disastrous event which turned Hyrule into the ruined state players explore during Breath of the Wild. The game's trailer also indicated players can fight alongside the warriors who passed in the Calamity and assist Link as ghosts during Breath.

According to Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is not the Breath of the Wild 2 Nintendo teased during 2019's E3. That game is still in development and it will be some time before Nintendo will provide new updates.

KOEI Tecmo Games states in the video that Age of Calamity was created in partnership with the Zelda team, meaning the graphics, art assets, and characters from Breath of the Wild will be consistent with Nintendo's title.

The game is set to release on November 20th, 2020.

Part of me hopes that there could be an alternate bonus non-canon ending where you DO manage to defeat Ganon and BotW basically never happens.

That or it surprises with a "midquel" campaign between BotW1 and BotW2 where it's cleanup duty and you reassemble the army and rebuild Hyrule and you get playable Sidon and Kass and such.
