NBC Announces *Sigh* Animated David Pumpkins Halloween Special
Leave it Saturday Night Live to take something fun and amusing and run it right into the ground.
When SNL introduced David S. Pumpkins, the indelible mischief maker of Halloween played by America’s Dad Tom Hanks, last October, a satisfied nation sighed and said, “Well, that was a fun little trifle. Now, on to other things.” After an exchange of GIFs from the skit, a handful of fan art illustrations and Halloween costumes, America moved on.
But SNL had other plans.
Yesterday, Deadline reported that SNL is teaming up again with Hanks to resurrect David S. Pumpkins for one more night of spoopy fright in a half-hour animated Halloween special in October. That’s right, the viral SNL sketch, where the joke is that the sketch is… stupid, will fill 22 minutes of air time with a whole lot of Tom Hanks saying "I'm David Pumpkins."
In case you somehow missed it, the special revolved around David S. Pumpkins, a pumpkin-suited Tom Hanks, and his two skeleton-dressed dancers, as they desperately try to frighten a couple on a "haunted elevator" ride by simply saying his own name as his cohorts make baby noises. It's funny, but four minutes is about all we can take of it.
"It’s scary how quickly the original SNL sketch caught on, and we’re thrilled that Tom Hanks is back to keep the fun going,"said George Cheeks, President, Business Operations and Late Night Programming, NBC Entertainment and Universal Television, who clearly hates his audience or something.
Set in a suburban town on the eve of Halloween, the upcoming sketch will star Tom Hanks in his reprised role as David S. Pumpkins, along with SNL cast members Mikey Day and Bobby Moynihan as his dancing skeleton buddies, who try to explain the true meaning of Halloween to a young boy and his sister, but end up baffling them once again, because the joke is… stupid. In addition to Hanks, Game of Thrones actor Peter Dinklage will guest star as a new character.
Now that we’re staring down the barrel of an entire special of someone screaming “I’m David Pumpkins” with skeletons dancing behind him, it's worth asking ourselves: Where does the human race go from here? Should we retreat into ourselves and admit defeat? Do we write our senators and ask them to please stop this? Nope. We go on Twitter and complain about it.
However, some people just want enjoy something simple again. Can you blame them? With news reports of possible nuclear extinction on the horizon every other week, maybe Tom Hanks is just what we need to quell the unease of cold war.
The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special will air on October 28th at 11:30 p.m. (ET/PT).

Okay, I know everybody here is saying "Don't judge it until you see it", and that's relatively fair. But I just want to say that SNL has a terrible track record with their movies. Only "Blues Brothers" and "Wayne's World" are universally considered 'good', with things like "It's Pat", "The Ladies Man", and "Stuart Saves His Family" clogging up the rest of their filmography. And the thing most people complained about those films? It was stretching out a single joke for too long.
The only upside I can see with this special is that they're keeping it to 22 minutes. While that's still enough time for the joke to get old, at least it will keep things brisk and allow the comedy to come faster. My fingers are crossed that this'll turn out good, but I've still got plenty of doubts.

I'm getting Vietnam flashbacks.

For context:
Both are movies/specials that are made via sketches in sketch shows.

But I kind of like the Good Burger movie…

I don't live in America so this is the first time I've heard of either the original skit or the cartoon, and I've watched neither, but I'm preemptively declaring the whole thing garbage because I'm hungover and feel like shitting on something for the sake of being curmudgeonly.
Any questions?

Seems a little prejudgemental here.

Ok, I got a few different things to say, so for flow purposes, I'm gonna break this comment down and sort it into numbered parts.
1) I'm hype about this, so y'all can go screw it for all I care. That one screenshot alone just screams old school Scooby-Doo, haunted house and all. Also, I miss hearing Peter Dinklage's voice as the Ghost in Destiny, so I look forward to his role too.
2) I'm making a presentation in class Monday and I needed a slide at the end to pause for questions. Your thoughts?
3) So everyone here KNEW that they were gonna do some kinda follow up to one of their most successful skits in YEARS, right? Like, just asking so I can make sure this didn't surprise anyone.
HotPotato
I will retroactively endorse your slide, it's awesome and fitting.
Walrus the Tree
Thanks. Didn't get a very noticeable reaction, just a few possibly knowing smirks from the class. But people did actually have a lot of questions about my presentation, so I'll count it as a success.

Why aren't there any conservative comedy programs?
Aaron Hong
shh, I know this one… um…
Cos the conservatives ARE the joke?
*sigh*
Hey hey hey leave me out of this, ya hear?
SonicLover
Leave it to the Internet to brand something as irredeemably terrible the instant they first hear about it.
Personally, I think it's too early to judge. Until the box is open, there's no telling whether the cat is alive or dead.
…maybe that's a bad analogy.

Especially if it's Schrodinger's…

What did you think I was referring to?
The_Applesauce
Actually, in the context that everyone uses it in I'd say it's a pretty good analogy. It's widely misused though, so in it's actual context it's not great.

It wouldn't be SNL if they ruined a a decent joke.

I don't find David Pumpkins that funny but I know some people find him hilarious. That said I don't think the joke has the longevity to last a 30 tv special, nor do I think the group that enjoys the joke has the attention span for the special nor do I think they enjoy animated stuff.
