Multiversus, which ancient gamers may remember was a well-liked platform fighter featuring iconic Warner Brothers characters, won Fighting Game Of The Year in 2022 and charged players up to $100 for booster packs, looks like it's about to come out.

Yesterday, the Twitter account for the game tweeted what appears to be a tease of something coming, leading to a mixed reaction on social media.

Multiversus "released" in July 2022 and quickly became a popular fighting game on platforms like Twitch. The free-to-play game had a steady release of new content and while its popularity didn't necessarily rival uber-platform fighter Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, it generally garnered goodwill against its closest rival, the other major-IP platform fighter Nickelodeon All Star Brawl.

Then in March 2023, after eight months of garnering that goodwill, it suddenly reminded the world that it was actually in open beta, and that open beta would close on June 25th.

This did not go over all that well with players, many of whom noted that the game was charging fairly significant sums for bonus content. Furthermore, money spent on the game would not be refunded, even though its developers were essentially taking away a game that had been out for nearly a year. The only potential saving grace was that all the content users paid for would still be accessible when the game was released for real in "early 2024."

At the time, some doubted the game would ever see the light of day again, but yesterday's tweet, which qualifies as being posted in "early 2024," seems to indicate Multiversus will make good on its promise.

This led to mixed reactions, as some users were happy to see the game back again while others were still miffed about that whole "charging users for content then disappearing for a year" business.

The timing of their tweet led people to believe Multiversus would be announced at today's Xbox Partner Preview showcase. It was not.

Game should not have been a F2P live service, period.

The game will sadly be a financial success because people will forgive them and make excuses instead of letting them rot in hell like they deserve. The industry is only as bad as it is because people let this shit happen. You deserve better, hold these companies to a higher standard.

It didn't charge no one, game was free(mium, of course), kinda low to take two random no name tweets to make it seem "it led to mixed reactions" when most people talking about it are glad it's coming back

I stand corrected, but even so you can see for yourself the replies under his tweet and how they're mostly positive towards the game (and negative towards his tweet). I also don't get the thumbs down on my post, did i miss something about the game? Last i recall they did say they were coming back, it's not the first game that does this in the first place, are people mad they kept their promise? Or again, i just missed something?
I mean i am biased cause i never spent money on it sure, but i'm pretty sure they also said whatever you bought you'll still own when the game comes back, and again now that it is coming back somehow that's reason to be mad? I don't get it, i really feel i'm missing something else that happened

i think people are upset at the practice of potentially taking money and then saying "ok you cant have that thing you spent money for for a year now." My read on it was a lot of people thought the game wasnt coming back at all and there was really no guarantee it was coming back, which sure made it seem like they grabbed people who paid's cash and ran. This engendered a really negative feeling about the game from some neutral observers. them coming back and making good on their promise is more like, the bare minimum thing they could have done, when, with all the hype, awards and money they generated, some think they never should have gone dark in the first place
