(Sony Pictures)

A trailer for Sony Pictures' adaptation of Monster Hunter dropped today, captivating the internet's attention and reminding it how much Milla Jovovich kicks ass.

The film is directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, the B-movie action-blockbuster auteur who directed Jovovich in multiple Resident Evil movies and also directed the Mortal Kombat movie. He appears to be bringing the same flair to Monster Hunter, centering the plot not around the characters of the Monster Hunter universe but rather an American army squad, helmed by Jovovich, who get magically transported to the realm of giant monsters, which they then hunt, etc.

The trailer shows off impressive CGI and a lot of clichés, including Jovovich's team saying things like "This is way above my pay grade," another saying "What are we, the Guardians of the Galaxy?", and a third going "Holy sh--" when a monster pops out.

While the script may be iffy, fans of the video game series can at least trust in the fidelity of the monsters. In an interview with Polygon, Anderson said Capcom had the game's animators advise him on the creatures' movements, down to the fidelity of their toenails.

The film is scheduled to be released on December 30th, 2020.

I don't want it to suck, but I'm getting "Dragon Ball Evolution" vibes of tone-deafness to the source material here. I'd take a "Ghost in the Shell" level of adaptation, but even that might be asking for too much unfortunately.

So basically they tried to make it more realistic and grounded to apeal to a wider audience and realized midway how impossible it would be to fuze realistic action scene and injuries with fighting giant dinosaures with oversized swords.

They really like Milla Jovovich in Capcom-related movies. What's next? Milla Jovovich in Haunting Grounds? Milla Jovovich in Dino Crisis? Milla Jovovich in Clock Tower?

Ya know, I would say that the plot of a military team getting teleported into the Monster Hunter world is stupid and lore breaking, but Geralt from the Witcher and a Moogle from Final Fantasy 14 did it and I liked it, soooo…

I guess we'll see how it goes. That they actually got the advice of the game's animators so they could get the monsters right is kinda encouraging too.

it'll be mediocre garbage at best, just like all wes anderson movies. Also making MH into a serious action movei is dumb, not to mention how it's just military propaganda.

they should just make it into a documentary that explores the world of the monster and hunters, that's a much better movie than just milla, badass, kill dragon.
