(Nintendo)

Nintendo and Masahiro Sakurai left Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans agog this morning when they delivered on one of the Smash fandom's longest-running memes and actually announced Minecraft Steve and a slew of other Minecraft characters as the next DLC fighter.

The reveal trailer was followed by a brief talk by Sakurai who almost seemed to be cushioning against potential pushback, noting how not every character in Smash is one he wants to add and in this case, Nintendo approached him to put Minecraft in the game. He appeared beleaguered by the amount of work it took to retool the game and stages to make Steve, Alex, Zombie and Enderman playable in Smash, at one point commenting on Nintendo executives, "Do they think (adding characters) is like magic?"

The stream absolutely ignited the Smash fandom, as some people were overjoyed and others furious at the new addition. Coincidentally, Twitter stopped working right as the trailer dropped, causing many fans to think the announcement literally broke the site.

While the drop is certainly surprising, it is yet another meme in the Smash community Sakurai has made a reality. Smash Ultimate has included Ridley and a Sans skin. A stream in which Sakurai will go more in-depth on the fighting styles of the Minecraft cast is scheduled for Saturday.

Didn't want him, never played Minecraft, but he actually looks like a nice addition.

i always thought minecraft would be best represented as a stage alone, don't know how to feel about the character. I have to say though they did such a good job representing MC that everything looks stripped right out of the game and put in smash, like this pic here could pass as just a minecraft screenshot

It's too bad Notch sold off the property. I mean, sure, he'll always be the creator of the game, but it's not the same.

Though this does raise the question if more Microsoft properties could be added later, if not this version of Smash, then in future installments.

I'm just hoping that Shantae might have a shot later.

…Any chance of The Knight or The Penitent One being added someday?

A lot of MC's longelivety has to do with MS supporting it oeer the years tho. By the time Notch sold it off he was barely personally involved with it anymore, it was all Jeb's doing. Notch's version of MC was very, VERY basic in comparison. Jeb did the main work. And MS did a LOT of optimization work, so the game doesn't run like crap with this much content.

That and the question with Notch having gone off the deep end… question being if same had happened if he never sold to MS. But since Indie games and creators are very attached, it may have been too much of a PR risk for anyone to touch it with a ten-foot pole.

Also Banjo is in. Which is already an MS property. Minecraft is the second one.

The mechanics look neat. It'll be interesting to see how he plays.

4 fighters? Does there need to be this much from a third party series?

They're just skins not actual standalone characters.

the animation was so faithful I tried to stop myself from thinking it was just a bunch of people memeing.

I have no strong feelings. Steve definitely looks unique at least.

My younger (now mid-20's) brother used to play Minecraft back in its original heyday, so I'm sure he's happy.

Steve in Smash looks cool and all, but I think some of his moveset is quite lackluster. Especially his Final Smash; it looks really cringily generic. The rest of his moveset looks pretty good, though. I was actually trying to create my own Steve moveset for the past few months, and I still think I'll keep working on it. Anyway, Steve looks fun to play as and I'll definitely be playing as him a lot.

I hard disagree. He does have flashy moves but the sheer amount of unique mechanics he brings are enough to fill that hole. Villager wasn't flashy and yet their moveset was pretty iconic.

That being said, I also disagree on the final smash. Maybe it was just the hype trailer music but getting shoved into an explosive dungeon is way better than big beam super number 43

I'm fine with it. It makes a lot of sense for a third party pick, especially since Microsoft IPs are clearly allowed.

What I love about this though is that a lot of the joke leaks are becoming more real than the hacks trying to make believable leaks for internet points.
