A fake tweet yesterday announced that fast-food chain McDonald's will switch to all-day breakfast service in the United States, leading a number of people online to get very worked up and generally creating the kind of delicious mayhem pioneered in recent fake news article screenshot memes like Goblin Mode and the infamous Snicker's Vein.

Like in the @transgendermarx (JUNIPER) posts that originally popularized the meme type, the phrase "NO FUCKING WAY" in all caps is typically used to advertise the screenshot and generate hype.

Unlike @transgendermarx, however, who always commits to the bit, the original poster of the McDonald's hoax seemed to back down after seeing the response to their tweet, claiming they had not known it was false at the time of posting. The original tweet, which earned almost 150,000 likes in less than a day, was also deleted. It's also possible that the backing-down itself is an ironic continuation of the bit.

Before dreams of 24/7 breakfast were crushed, many posters initially responded to the news as if it were real, sharing joy about the new McDonald's all-day breakfast menu with enthusiastic tweets.

But even amid all the good (although inaccurate) news, some people found reason to complain. In particular, they seemed to believe the McGriddle would not be included on the new all-day breakfast menu and loudly proclaimed their frustrations.

McDonald's, which maintains a highly active, meta and "quirky" marketing Twitter account, has yet to reply to or comment on the viral story. Last night, however, McDonald's Twitter did hop on the emerging brands tweeting one word trend with an addition of its own.

Spaztastic Man

COVID was literally an excuse for them to delete that shit. Not even 100 people infected when I was out working nightshift in February of 2020 and immediately McDonalds cuts the All-day breakfast menu. No hint of any kind of shortage, no logistical issues to speak of.

Do you know how hard it is to get breakfast when you wake up at 4:30 in the afternoon for a 12 hr shift everynight.
