Marvel Fans Are Very, Very Upset A Critic Spoiled A Post-credits Detail In 'Eternals'
WARNING: This article will contain a potential spoiler about Eternals and the MCU.
Some Marvel fans are coming up with drastic measures to prevent spoilers after Variety critic Matt Donnelly tweeted out some news revealed in the post-credits scene of Marvel's Eternals, though some are debating if the detail even counts as a spoiler.
The offending tweet is thus:
(If you want to avoid spoilers and are still reading, now is the time to click away).
Big reveal from #TheEternals premiere -- Harry Styles has joined the MCU as Eros, brother of Thanos.
— Matt Donnelly (@MattDonnelly) October 19, 2021
The news naturally got fans of pop singer Harry Styles and Marvel movies excited, and there were many tweets celebrating his inclusion in the MCU. However, there were also many tweets from people who were very angry that Donnelly revealed the surprise casting, which hadn't been announced prior to Eternals release.

Make that 2 editors at VARIETY. It's literally the world premiere of a Marvel movie that the public don't get to see for weeks and two motherfuckers decided to break embargo and deliberately post the spoiler of the post credit scene?! We at the 26th MCU flick and you do this shit pic.twitter.com/M2uhD75mQv

One user went so far as to propose a $1 million fine to anyone who leaks information about a film online.
BTW, in light of all the spoilers from Suicide Squad, Eternals and other films… I am TOTALLY ALL FOR press and other audiences seeing a movie early having to fill out a full personal information Non-Disclosure contract under penalty of $1 million or more. Dead serious.

This all seems rather drastic considering that Donnelly didn't reveal any details about the film's plot or the contents of the post-credits scene Styles appears in (aka "spoil" it), and many noted that the appearance of one of the world's biggest stars in a Marvel film was in fact something a film reporter should report on and it was going to leak anyway.
I have obsessive-compulsive disorder and understand spoiler anxiety, however: a) casting news is not in of itself a spoiler, b) a massive global pop star being cast in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was going to leak no matter what, so try to relax beloved lol

Part of the reason marvel fans are so adamantly against spoilers is because there is approximately no reason to see the films after you know about what happens in the end credits scenes and shit. They are ostensibly 2 hour trailers for the avengers or whatever crossover film

Here's the bottom line on #ETERNALS spoiler situation: the film benefits greatly from this news getting out there, this person's fan base is MASSIVE & RABID and generally not hardcore CBM fans, opening the door to an even wider audience than you already have with Marvel property

As evidenced by the fact that Donnelly's tweet is still up, it seems he will likely face no repercussions—and certainly not a $1 million fine—for tweeting about the cast of a movie.

Ultima Casting Brachiosaurus
Well there goes the only reason to see the movie.

I'm surprised the MCU is introducing the walking date rape drug.

I don't mind spoilers myself, but its poor form to ruin it for those who like the surprise. What i'm looking forward to is the shitstorm of tweets when people find out about how "problematic" the subject of the spoiler is in comic continuity.

People who deliberately spoil anything (movies, video games, series) are fucking assholes.

Man, to think I was a overly obsessed Marvel fanboy at one point. Do I think spoiling a movie should be frowned upon? Yeah, sure, why not. I'd probably be upset too (If i actually cared for the new marvel movies.) But the idea to fine a person a million dollars is so unbearably stupid, its hilarious.
