(Logan Paul / YouTube)

If you were to tell someone in January of 2018 that in two and a half years Logan Paul would be celebrated on social media for delivering a clear and powerful anti-racist message to his legion of subscribers, you'd likely be called insane. Yet Paul, once one of the most reviled people on the internet, is being widely praised on Twitter for a passionate speech he delivered in support of Black Lives Matter.

On Tuesday, Paul shared an episode of his podcast Impaulsive plainly titled "America Is Racist." While at first visibly nervous at what he was about to do, Paul quickly gained steam as he read a prepared monologue on racism, white privilege, politicians and police.

"Listen closely. One of my biggest learnings from all of this and I am embarrassed that it has taken me 25 years to realize this: It is not enough to be 'not racist'. You have to be anti-racist," he said. "Condemn those who feign superiority because of the color of their skin. Friends--hold friends accountable. Hold your family accountable. Hold yourself accountable."

Paul acknowledged that the color of his skin has played a factor allowing him to get away with what he calls "the hooliganism" in his vlogs.

"If you're white, if you look like me, use your privilege. And for those who do not think that white privilege exists, you are f--king blind. You are delusional and you are part of the problem," he said. "I can count on 0 hands the amount of times that I have feared for my life at a routine traffic stop. That has never happened. Half of the reason I'm able to get away with some of my hooligan s--t I do in my vlogs is because I'm a white kid. I'm confident that I do not have to fear for my life should the cops show up. Acknowledge and weaponize your privilege."

"On behalf of Breonna Taylor," he said, "we must change. On behalf of Ahmaud Arbery, we must advance. And on behalf of George Floyd and the hundreds of others who have been unjustly murdered in this country, we must evolve."

The statement was seen as a stunning face turn for Paul, who was seen at the Los Angeles protests that day, days after his brother Jake drew backlash for appearing at a mall that was being looted during protests in Arizona. Jake Paul has since been charged with trespassing.

Speaking about Jake, Logan Paul acknowledged the complicated situation but nevertheless defended his brother from accusations of looting.

"To be honest, this one is so f--king hard for me because I love the kid," he said. "I love him, I will always love him, but I don't always like him. He's my brother, he's my family, he's my blood… Why he was inside of a mall that was being looted, I have no idea… Although it's very unfortunate, it is also very on-brand for Jake Paul to magically be seen at a looting site."

He continued, "While I condemn the fact that he was at a looting site and stuck around long enough for videos to be taken where it looked like he was kinda just hanging out, you are a f--king moron if you think my brother was actively participating in looting. He was not actively participating in looting."

Paul's statement won the surprised approval of many viewers.

His speech writer is getting good! I almost believed Logan wrote it himself this time.

deplorable

i've used my white privilege since my family was being prosecuted for their roman catholic religious beliefs in a protestant scotland….

wait.

Did you say privilege or being beaten to death? i get those confused, because americans don't have these problems so they associate words to things they have no idea about in other cultures or countries.

In the future, Jake Paul will give the speech to aid the rebellion while Logan films himself torturing a guy.

Although I might just be unreasonably nit-picking since its Logan, the video at the bottom of this comment is what I think of when I read of intentionally provocative comments like, "And for those who do not think that white privilege exists, you are f--king blind. You are delusional and you are part of the problem". Don't get me wrong, I do believe privilege exists, but this strategy that he uses really is not an effective method for helping people nor is it effective at achieving any form of what the ultimate goal should be. When your first response to someone wondering about whether or not privilege exists is "you're clearly an idiot" or some statistically insignificant assertion about your own life (n=1), you are most likely only inciting more division.

You have to remember that the goal isn't to gain fake social media points and praise for "owning those morons", but to establish a fair environment for everyone (preferably) through rational discussion and action. Yes, I acknowledge that even so there will still be people that won't change their minds or actions/biases, but those people should not have been your intended audience in the first place. I understand that it is hard to not be excessively emotional at times like this (and I grant that he made some partially valid points in other parts), but nonetheless, it is unlikely that the spirit of this video will result in any pragmatic decisions being made for the progress of society.

TLDR: One of the first lines of this video sums it up perfectly: "I don't think you encourage people to change their mindset and their behaviors by shaming them".
