Earlier this week, Lionel Messi finally captured the most prestigious title in the world, notching an accomplishment that will leave no doubt that he is the "Greatest of All Time."

That's right, folks, Messi now holds the record for the most-liked Instagram post of all time.

On Sunday, Messi posted a picture of himself holding the World Cup trophy that he and Argentina had earned after defeating France in a thrilling final. Within two days, the post racked up over 64 million likes, defeating the previous record holder — an egg.

The World Record Egg was posted in 2019 as a sort of viral prank to overtake a Kylie Jenner photo as the most-liked Instagram post of all time. The campaign worked within 10 days and for three years, the Egg reigned supreme on Instagram, gaining over 57 million likes by the time Messi won his World Cup.

Once it became clear that Messi had a shot to earn the title, many of his fans announced they would remove their likes from the Egg to help their GOAT.

Though a silly achievement in the grand scheme of Messi's life, his new record underscores the global support he has garnered through his professional career and the narrative significance of him capping off his incredible career with the one title that had eluded him until that point.
