(Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez next to the Koningshaven bridge.)

Judging from his presence within memes, it seems like few particularly like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, so when news broke this week that Bezos' 417-foot, $500 million superyacht was too big to pass underneath a Rotterdam bridge in the Netherlands, reporters across the web jumped onto the story of peak late capitalism.

According to Dutch News, the bridge will be partly demolished in order for the boat to pass through after getting approval from the local council. The yacht is newly manufactured, being constructed for Bezos' pleasure within the Oceano shipyard located in Alblasserdam. However, when it's time for Bezos to ride the thing, it's going to have to pass beneath the Koningshaven bridge, also known as De Hef.

News of the story broke on Twitter yesterday where users reacted to the billionaire's opulence, most in disbelief that one could hold the power to dismantle a landmark. Others centered on ironically understating the size of Bezos' mega-yacht and some even hinted at throwing objects at it when the time comes.

Already so early in 2022, Bezos has been dunked on in memes for his New Year's Eve photoshoot. It seems he can't escape humorous backlash from the internet, but when others like Stephen Speilberg are also getting Dutch yachts in the mail, it's hard to just isolate him as the only uber-rich person gone seemingly overboard.

…Summon the Watergeuzen. They will show Mr. Bezos what happens when you mess with the Dutch.

He's too rich to bother thinking ahead of time.

The builders back in 1927, however, will be getting the full blame for not thinking of Jeff Bezos.

Can we kill this asshole now? I call this the moral event horizon. If he's willing to destroy history for his fucking boat, how long before he's willing to murder for less?

Have you seen the working conditions of the warehouses, he's been happy to torture and kill people for a long long time.
Worked at the swansea one over a christmas, holy fuck was that place bad. "Mandatory overtime" (illegal in the UK) from first night shift, turned 5×10 hour shifts into 6×12 hour ones. So many people walked that first day, wish I followed them. Befriended a guy who had a mental breakdown picking, the lights don't work and the timer still beeps at you incessantly regardless.. They found him huddled in a corner with a flipped cart and the scanner beeping away.
No comment on the murder part.

According to the source linked in the article, they are only going to temporarily remove the middle section, with hopes that it will only be for one day.

But of course KYM neglected to mention this, because outrage gets more clicks I guess.

I kind of assume that, like me, they simply assumed that "we're tearing down PART of this bridge" implied "we're going to put it back" strongly enough that because they're not just tearing the whole thing down, that they're going to put it back.
Still not great to even partially demolish it, though.
