The Last Of Us, widely heralded as one of the best games of the PlayStation 3, is getting a remake, coming out on the PlayStation 5 on September 2nd, 2022. This struck many as odd, as the common consensus seems to be that The Last Of Us has aged just fine since 2013 and has no need for a remake, especially considering a remastered version of the 2013 release is available for download on the PlayStation Store.

Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann and voice actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson revealed the remake at yesterday's Summer Games Fest stream. A leaked listing for the game describes it as "a total overhaul of the original experience, faithfully reproduced but incorporating modernized gameplay, improved controls and expanded accessibility options. Plus, feel immersed with improved effects and enhanced exploration and combat." The base remake will retail for $70.

Though The Last Of Us is inarguably one of the most beloved games of all time by critics and audiences alike, the news of an expensive remake didn't exactly hype fans up, as many couldn't imagine what new features Naughty Dog could add to a twice-released 10-year-old game that would justify the $70 price tag.

In many cases, the selling point of remakes is improved graphical quality or giving the original a much-needed layer of polish, neither of which felt necessary for The Last Of Us to many commenters.

While many poked fun at the remake and made memes, there are definitely some people who are excited about the graphical improvements shown off in the trailer.

Though the reaction to The Last Of Us remake is overall tepid for now, we'll have to wait until September to see if players feel the remake justifies the hefty price tag.

I think this is really evidence of how we're getting asymptotically closer to video game graphics looking just "real". Since the PS3 and Xbox 360 days, there just hasn't really been any massive step up in what video games look like imo. Sure, they do look a bit better, but the differences are getting smaller and smaller each time and becoming increasingly about minor details.

Oh boy, can't wait for weirdos to say Ellie looked hotter in the old graphics.

I dunno why, but PS-bros on Twitter always are obsessing over graphics especially with these games that seem less like games and more like playable movies. Meanwhile Xbox and (some) PC bros are increasingly like "the graphics are good enough but not great and we're okay with that" and Nintendo stans are like "who cares about graphics if the game is fun?" and it just makes like PS-bros look like people only counting polygons and thinking its the biggest own possible.

And I have to agree, why tout great graphics and graphical improvements again and again if the gameplay is not evolving? I'd rather play Minecraft warts and all or a retro gaming experience than sit through a "cinematic movie-like game" like TLOU on its umpteenth re-release.

Calling it now: the remake is actually going to be a revisionist take to be more in line with the sequel and the Netflix series, and Joel's getting his character assassinated all over again.
