Sony announced the "PS5 Pro" today, a souped-up version of the PlayStation 5 console that will offer "the graphics that the game creators aspire to, at the high frame rates players typically prefer."

For example, according to Sony's Mark Cerny, the distant crowds in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will look much clearer with a PS5 Pro. This technological advancement will cost a whopping $700.

The introduction of a "Pro" console version has become an industry standard practice, as Sony previously introduced a PS4 Pro, while Nintendo did the same for the Switch.

The PS5 Pro, however, has been met with many scoffs in the hours after its announcement due to its hefty price tag – the PlayStation 5 was already plenty expensive at launch and still retails at $450 – for what's being perceived as a minor technological improvement.

Part of the perceived lack of value with the PS5 Pro comes from Sony's much-memed paltry library of exclusive games, meaning players who really want the graphical fidelity promised by the Pro can have that experience with a mid-range gaming PC.

Sony will market several games that can take advantage of the PS5 Pro's capabilities as "PS5 Pro Enhanced" titles, but gamers' ability to play a slightly better-looking version of, for example, Demon's Souls or The Last Of Us Part II hasn't excited many players.

The PS5 Pro will be released in November, but judging from the initial response from social media, the company may need to find a way to juice it with $700 worth of value in two months if they want people to buy it at launch.

All I can tell you is that Britain and the Eurozone are getting absolutely fucked with these prices, as usual.

As a reminder, 1 EUR = 1.10 USD and 1 GBP = 1,31 USD using current exchange rates.

I think the average person could think of better and smarter ways to spend seven hundred dollars than buying a new console.

Sony, stop. That's not how you recoup your losses from Concord.

This console does not deserve a title "Pro".
Nor such ptice.
I would rather play Sega CD over this.

Very few games actually take advantage of the current gen's power, and most examples of questionable performance are likely just poor optimization. The price to have extra brute force to make sure something like FF16 runs at a locked 60fps just isn't worth it.

Or rather, it is, but not on the isolated space of the PS5 library. If you're willing to spend $700 for the power, might as well go a bit further, have a more powerful PC, and have a massively larger library to play.

Should also add we are at a point where the investors give much less of a damn about how high fidelity games are. There was a recent Capcom investors meeting where in spite of Capcom trying to pitch Monster Hunter Wilds as this impressive big new ambitious entry investors still had to ask "Why isn't this on the Switch?".
