(A24)

400 years ago, it was 2015, and A’Ziah Wells, aka Zola, began a Twitter thread with the words, "Y'all wanna hear a story about why me and this white bitch fell out? It's kinda long, but it's full of suspense."

What followed was an absolutely harrowing tale of a Florida road trip that featured prostitution, drugs and murder that gripped the entire internet. The Zola Story, as it came to be known, was a surreal, stranger-than-fiction tale that is still an excellent read to this day. Naturally, Hollywood came calling, and today, five years after the story was told, the first trailer for The Zola Story's cinematic adaption dropped.

The film, directed by Janicza Bravo, is based on Wells' tweets and a Rolling Stone interview Wells gave that fills in more of the details. The film is being released by A24 and stars Taylour Paige as Zola, Riley Keough as her partner-in-literal-crime Jessica and Nicholas Braun as Derrek. The film has been in development for some time and was initially set to be developed by James Franco.

Wells, for her part, seemed extremely excited about the release.
