(Twitter / @ElonMusk)

Elon Musk, while very rich, is not exactly known for having deep thoughts, but he nevertheless tried his hand at one late last Monday when he tweeted a small poem about space.

The poem is likely a reference to criticisms Musk and his billionaire brethren Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson have faced for funding personal journeys to outer space rather than investing their enormous wealth in humanitarian causes such as combatting world hunger or fighting climate change. However, Musk's humble poem seemed to do little to sway his critics, who responded with poems of their own.

Others were more pointed in their criticism, and took to sharply implying that Musk should invest his space race money elsewhere.

While it seems that Musk is certainly aware people are criticizing him, Musk still seems to have plans to go to space—albeit on a Virgin rocket, not a Tesla one.

Ignoring people being angry about a billionaire going to space i'm surprised to find that so many people today think that mankind shouldn't venture out into space at all.

I really wish some of these people would invest the energy they do seethe at the idea that they can't control how other people spend their money, and actually look into the revolutionary things happening around the world, largely funded by capital that is provided by these billionaires. For example, the Noor 1, 2 and 3 in Morocco, one of the largest solar farms in the Sahara (set to expand) is largely funded by wealthy Saudi investors. Amazon is rapidly building solar farms across the US and Europe, and for all the shit Tesla get's it did create a viable marketplace for electric vehicles, where more and more car companies are switching to fully in the next day. Private investment into renewable energy in 2020 doubled from 2019. Many international big banks which fund massive poverty reduction and ecological sustainability projects across the world – such as the the Great Green Wall in Africa, are invested in heavily by private investors, namely the extremely wealthy. I'm not saying governments don't have a role in this at all – they do, but give credit where credit is due.

Just because there is good in the world doesn't mean we can just ignore the malicious ignorance happening in front of us.

Look man, this isn't a government vs private investor thing, people just think that Musk's tweet sounds stupid.

This would be a pretty neat event for Stellaris; when you find a Tomb World, you can sometimes encounter a floating, abandoned spaceship, containing only one dissecated alien husk and tons upon tons of an old, ancient currency, which you can either turn into a decent ammount of energy or some small Society Research boost.

What makes this worse is that if if the aliens encounter Bezos and Musk first on their space journey, they may think that they are typical examples of our species and decide to mercy kill humanity

If you have the power to tweet all day, you have the power to a living wage. And no, don't tell me they're talking about other people other than themselves, these idiots really think the average american citizen is really that poor, and they even are said average citizen and not the upper mid class.

I'm really sick of those idiots with chocolate all over their face saying they're starving.

Hope for what exactly?
This guy is unbelievably tone deaf. While our planet is marching ever closer towards ecological disaster, growing rates of poverty and political instability, this asshole is talking "HECKIN MARS COLONIES DUDE!" as if the average person anywhere gives a shit about something that is a years away from being possible, decades away from being realized and God knows how long from being affordable.

Hey aliens? If you're out there, capture Elon Musk and brainwash him to make him give people a living wage and pay his taxes.

Jon the Wizard

Well his company doesn't, so therefore he doesn't by association.

Chewybunny

Which taxes does the company not pay?
If he draws a salary or any income out of any of those companies then he pays income taxes on that income. If the company has any property it must most likely pay a property tax. If the company is operating and employing people in the US it has to pay social security tax. So I am not sure which taxes it's not paying.

My only solace is that these billionaires will be fucking miserable living in space. Even if they escape this hellhole they'll be as miserable if not more miserable than we are due to their actions.

What makes you think they are miserable now, or would be miserable in space?

0

HumbleWaterFilterMerchant

I never said their miserable now. They will be miserable in space because it will take centuries to make living in space comfortable for people. According to this twitter thread at least

Wow. What a thread – and a link to Salon of all places? This is like discussing space exploration, terraformation, future technology and robotics with one of the gals from Sex in the City.
