Elon Musk Says 'Cis' And 'Cisgender' Are Now Considered Slurs On Twitter, Triggering Heated Viral Debates
Elon Musk declared on Twitter today that the terms "Cis" and "Cisgender" are now considered "slurs" on Twitter and their use could be punishable by suspension.
In the tweet where he stated this, Musk was responding to the user @JamesEsses, a cisgender man who posted that he did not want to be called "cis" and was then inundated with replies saying he was "cis."
"Cis" and "Cisgender" are terms used to describe non-trans people and are not considered slurs by many organizations, though some conservatives have attempted to declare it one.
Musk has made no secret of his distaste for gender identity labels, once sparking an apparent argument with his ex-girlfriend Grimes after he tweeted his dislike of pronouns and later bizarrely tweeting "I'm not cis, you are" in an attempt to retort a cis man who was explaining why some cis people are forthcoming with their preferred pronouns.
Musk's decision to label these terms as slurs outraged many Twitter users, some of who believe it continues Musk's pattern of perceivably pandering toward bigots and transphobes on the platform, while others celebrated the move.
It is unclear if Musk can enforce a ban on the words "cis" and "cisgender" on Twitter, particularly because the site has reportedly been slow to stem the rise of actual slurs, which began appearing much more frequently on Twitter after Musk's takeover late last year.

It's amazing to me how many people don't know what "cisgender" means and furiously refuse to learn.
DonKonga
I know what it means; I just think it's dumb.
Revic
What alternative would you propose?
DonKonga
"Man" or "Woman" work pretty well.

Imagine if someone declared that "straight" and "straight person" were slurs.
This is literally, exactly the same thing.

Dear leader musk has declared all twitter users are now trans

"Cis" is in the same boat as "terf" where it isn't technically a slur but it sure seems to get thrown at people in a derisive or accusatory way an awful lot.
Also this doesn't read like they're banning the word outright, just saying that if you continually call people it in a harassing way then you'll get banned.

I don't know musk doesn't like to enforced rules

That… is actually fair. I doubt this happened in a vacuum, and given the quality of people on twitter I can easily believe it happens enough to be a problem.
With these kinds of things, I kinda wish there was a good way to manage who you interact with rather than use bannings and such. Like if someone was to use CIS as a slur I'd rather they be free to do that but at the same time ensure I never interact with them, rather than them holding their tongue and I potentially chatting with them.
Once again, with twitter the only real winning move is not to play.

I wonder if this'll be expanded to include things like "YT" and such.

I find it very amusing how offended conservatives get at being called "not trans"

On one hand, this is really stupid and makes little to no sense. On the other hand, it'll be nice to not see people dismiss others with the usual "uhh ur cis so i dont care" retort.
TheHolyEmpress
Just ban everything related to identity politics from that nest of toxicity of a website.
Nukegirl
But how is Elon Musk then supposed to preach about his own view on identity politics?
Rhettorical
He didn't say he's banning the words. In fact, Twitter doesn't ban any slurs. What's banned is "targeted, repeated harassment" of any sort.

It's another "Elon is a sad strange little man" story. Unlike Buzz, I will not give him my pity.
