If you follow Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders on Twitter, then you're familiar with the way his account echoes his regular talking points: drug prices in America are too high, America should offer similar social benefits to its citizens that the rest of the first world offers, billionaires should pay taxes, etc. If you follow Elon Musk on Twitter, then you're familiar with how he regularly uses the medium to s***post, sometimes with dire financial consequences. Perhaps it was a matter of time before the two interacted on the platform, and the results have been as embarrassingly messy as one might expect.

On Saturday, Senator Sanders tweeted, "We must demand that the extremely wealthy pay their fair share. Period." Musk, fresh off selling $6.9 billion in Tesla stock under the guise of paying taxes, tweeted "I keep forgetting that you’re still alive."

Musk's unprompted snipe at Sanders put a target on the billionaire's back, and Twitter users took to bringing up multiple things they "forgot" about Elon Musk, along with plenty of jokes at Musk's expense.

Perhaps it's understandable why Musk is grumpy at Sanders: Musk signaled that he "had" to sell Tesla stocks earlier this year or he would face a 50 percent marginal tax rate on them. Because Musk doesn't take income, he has avoided paying taxes on his wealth, but he will still have to pay taxes on the income he received from selling billions of dollars worth of stock. Whatever the case, it seems at the very least that Musk knows Bernie Sanders is still alive, and he's a little pissed at him.
