Elmo Responds As Video Of Him Denying The Liveliness Of Zoe's Pet Rock 'Rocco' Goes Viral
Prominent Sesame Street resident Elmo has made a statement about his extreme reaction towards Zoe's pet rock Rocco after a video of him angrily denying the rock's aliveness went viral across the web this week.
The video, taken from a 2004 episode of Sesame Street, shows Elmo asking his friend Zoe for an oatmeal raisin cookie only to be denied the cookie because Zoe's pet rock Rocco wants it. This causes Elmo to fly off the handle, yelling at Zoe about how Rocko's "just a rock," "doesn't have a mouth" and "isn't alive." The video was posted to Twitter on Monday where it went viral, gaining over 400,000 likes and 90,000 retweets in three days.
Elmo's history of rage towards Rocco doesn't begin and end here. In fact, Elmo has been denying that the rock is alive since 1999, with Zoe vehemently defending her pet throughout the years. Now, however, the feud has spread beyond the Sesame Street fandom and has inspired memes across the web, from Twitter to TikTok.
Yesterday, Elmo responded to the viral video and memes, ensuring everybody that his relationship with Zoe is all good and that they "practiced sharing" in the end, but that he still doesn't want to talk about Rocco in a tweet that gained over 294,000 likes in a day. He also took the time to pose the question, "Has anybody ever seen a rock eat a cookie?," as if trying to prove some sort of point. What that point might be, though, is anyone's guess.
The video's viral success follows in the viral footsteps of a number of Elmo clips taken from Sesame Street where the puppet sings and says certain phrases in a funny, passionate way akin to a New Yorker, including a clip of him singing the words "paper towel roll" and lyrics about chugging along like a train. The clips started to go viral on TikTok in December, with the Rocco video marking something of a peak for the trend.
