It's official: Doge is the most valuable meme in history.

The NFT auction for the image of Kabosu the Shiba Inu that dominated meme culture throughout the 2010s sold for an astounding $4.06 million (1696.9 ETH) today, obliterating the previous record for meme NFTs, which was Pepe the Frog's $1 million sale price in April. The winning bidder was cryptocurrency asset fund PleasrDAO, which also purchased Edward Snowden's NFT for $5.4 million in April.

"As Kabosu became a meme people love so much, I came to believe that Kabosu was given a special mission by the universe," said Atsuko, the Japanese kindergarten teacher who owns the physical form of the biggest star on the internet, ahead of the auction. "Through the launch of these NFTs, I'd like to help children in need all over the world. Kabosu and I would be very happy if we could help bring a smile to their face."

A significant portion of the money will go to various English and Japanese charities. They include Plan International, Terra Renaissance, Florence, the Japanese Red Cross, World Food Program, Ashi Naga and Japan Heart.
