Documentary About Memetic Magic 'You Can't Kill Meme' Picked Up By Utopia
Earlier today, Variety reported that the debut documentary by filmmaker Hayley Garrigus, titled You Can't Kill Meme, has been picked up for worldwide distribution by Brooklyn-based distributor Utopia. The trailer, featuring a glitchy editing style and numerous references to meme culture including lots of Pepes, was released late last month in anticipation of its premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal this month.
According to the film's IMDb page, the film follows Garrigus' "three-year descent into the anonymous internet underworld" in order to learn more about Meme Magic, a hypothetical idea shared largely around 4chan and associated with alt-right communities that imagines memes as having a sort of magical push that transcends the internet, resulting in real-life results.
It's often joked online that Meme Magic was behind the election of Donald Trump due to his large following of memers, and the documentary promises a deep look into this idea. It also boasts a number of interviews with key figures in the "memetic magic" and alt-right meme communities. The documentary premieres on August 15th in Montreal, with plans for a worldwide streaming release in the fall.
