Dakota Johnson Refuses To Understand Viral 'Madame Web' Meme
Dakota Johnson appeared to frighten an interviewer with the Huffington Post when she shared that she did not understand the virality of "He Was in the Amazon With My Mom When She Was Researching Spiders Right Before She Died," a phrase from the trailer for her new movie Madame Web that went viral and became a meme back in November.
The line, which is a run-on sentence describing a series of plot points for the film, turned into a sort of copypasta on social media, especially on X / Twitter.
Users shared the line in non-sequitur contexts and celebrated its absurd rhythm, strange cadence and value as pure exposition. Some experimented with new readings of the line, deviating from Johnson's relatively flat reading in the trailer.
"Why did that go viral?" Johnson asked, turning the question back on her interviewer. "I have no idea what it's about," she added, in a stone-cold deadpan, "What a silly thing." Then, she repeated the phrase and continued to express bafflement.
Some posters noticed that Johnson had refused to answer the question, and offered takes on why.
This isn't the first time Dakota Johnson has failed to understand (or, perhaps, decided not to understand) a meme about her. Despite being the star of memes like I'm Actually Allergic To Limes and That's Not True, Ellen, she told Entertainment Tonight, "I'm not really on social media, I don't see these things, so to me it's just … bizarre. Sorry, it's bizarre."
