Chris-Chan Placed In Male Jail Despite Identifying As Female

Chris Chan, whose real name is Christine Weston Chandler, was arrested in Virginia on Monday and is being charged with one count of incest after admitting to having sex with their elderly mother in a leaked phone call. It's now being reported that Chandler is doing a mandatory COVID-19 quarantine at Central Virginia Regional Jail, a men's jail.

This decision has sparked mixed feelings online. Chris Chan has identified as female since 2014 and legally changed her name from "Chris" to "Christine" in 2016. According to The Daily Mail, Chandler was to be placed with women originally, but her gender categorization was changed from female to male in the VINE system. Because of the severe nature of Chris Chan's crime, along with Chris Chan's lengthy, troubling past and her own alleged tendency to swap between male and female pronouns, users online are torn as to whether or not it's appropriate to defend Chandler's misgendering.

Chris Chan is currently being held without bond. According to Newsweek, Chandler got notably frustrated during the court hearing on Thursday, and even stomped her feet at the judge after being denied bond and the opportunity "to get everything back home."
