'Cyberpunk 2077' Developer CDPR Gets Hit By Ransomware Attack, Refuses To Negotiate With Hackers

Polish video game company CD PROJEKT RED reported having been targeted by a cyber attack, with hackers allegedly getting away with copies of source code for Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3 and Gwent and with CDPR's internal documents. The company has responded that they have no intention to negotiate with the hackers, who threatened to sell or leak the data should their demands remain unfulfilled.

On Tuesday, Polish developer and publisher CD PROJEKT RED posted an official statement regarding the yesterday cyber attack, disclosing that the hackers managed to access the company's internal network, collect company data and encrypt several devices within its network. CDPR reported that it managed to secure its infrastructure and restore the data and that it will not negotiate with the attackers.

CDPR clarified that to the best of their knowledge stolen data did not contain any personal player information.

In the announcement tweet, CDPR also included a .txt readme document sent by the attackers in which they notify CD PROJEKT of "having been EPICALLY pwned" and demand that the company enters negotiations within 48 hours. The note also states that the attackers managed to get hold of source codes for Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher and Gwent.

The choice of words made by the attackers did not go unnoticed on social media.

CDPR has been beset by criticisms in the months following the release of their much-anticipated open-world game Cyberpunk 2077 that was plagued by glitches and poor optimization. While it is unknown whether the attackers were motivated by CDPR failing to fully deliver on their promises, users on social media made posts in support both of the hackers and the developer.
