The most famous friendship on the internet returned to the headlines this week after a rumor began circulating that Asif has had another fallout with his longtime friend, Mudasir.

If you have no idea who these people are, here's the tl;dr version: In September 2015, Asif Raza Rana, a government worker from the northern city of Gujranwala, Pakistan, posted an announcement on his Facebook page that he is no longer besties with his longtime friend Mudasir Ismail Ahmed and has replaced him with another man named Salman Ahmad Naqash. Asif's dramatic status update, which was accompanied by an incredibly kitschy graphic image, instantly went viral across the social network and drew a whole lot of curiosity from people all over the world as to how the two best friends ended up falling out.

In the process, Asif's image became a meme in itself as many spectators began spinning jokes based on the snowclone “Friendship ended with X, Now Y is my best friend.” A month later, the bromance triangle seemingly came to a resolution when Asif announced that he and Mudasir have worked out their differences and that both Mudasir and Salman were his best friends.

But the story didn't end there. Since the story first broke in late 2015, there have been a number of follow-up status updates suggesting that the rift between Asif and Mudasir was never reconciled, and at one point, Mudasir and Salman had ditched Asif to form a friendship of their own, or at least according to a unverified screenshot of a status update allegedly posted by Asif. Then last week, the saga resurfaced on Twitter after a new rumor began circulating that Asif has once again severed his ties with Mudasir, which started with a tweet from @haarleyquin claiming that the drama has resumed after Salman and Asif ridiculed Mudasir in yet another stunningly gaudy captioned photograph, with one of the images telling Mudasir to "go cry alone now." Naturally, @haarleyquin's tweet set the social media ablaze with many people rallying behind the two internet-famous friends.

What a heartbreaking plot twist, right? But hold your tears, Team Mudasir. The third image in @haarleyquin’s post is not new. In fact, the earliest traceable version of the image appeared in a Reddit thread on November 16th, 2015, right in the midst of the original Asif-Mudasir-Salman bromance triangle. While it remains unclear why the image is circulating again as if it were new, there have been other signs that seem to paint a completely different picture, including a photograph of Asif and Mudasir hanging out that was posted on Facebook as recently as in July this year.

Don’t believe everything you read on the internet, kids. ¯\(ツ)
