As Logan Paul Gets Engaged, U.S. Senate Urges FDA To Investigate Prime
Logan Paul has had quite a busy Sunday. The YouTuber got engaged to his girlfriend, now fiancée, Nina Agdal the same day U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer urged the FDA to look into Paul's controversial energy drink, Prime, for being a potential danger to children.
Paul and Agdal announced their engagement after roughly 14 months of dating in a joint Instagram post on Sunday morning. The engagement took place at Lake Como, Italy.
Later that day, Senator Chuck Schumer took to Twitter to urge the FDA to investigate Paul and KSI's wildly popular drink Prime Energy for its high caffeine content (200mg for a 12-ounce can).
"PRIME Energy Drink has so much caffeine that it could endanger kids’ health, but it's being marketed to kids!" Schumer wrote. "The FDA must investigate PRIME for its absurd caffeine content and its marketing targeting kids on social media."
Schumer also held a press conference where he formally urged an investigation into Prime. There, he told reporters:
One of the summer’s hottest status symbols for kids is not an outfit, it’s not a toy--it’s a beverage. But buyer and parents beware because it’s a serious health concern for the kids it so feverishly targets. […] And the problem here is that the product has so much caffeine in it that it puts Red Bull to shame, but unlike Red Bull, [Prime] is specifically targeted--the advertising campaign is targeted at kids under 18. I’m releasing a letter [on July 9] asking The FDA to investigate Prime for number one, its claims; number two, it’s marketing aimed at kids; and number three, its eye-popping caffeine content.
Prime has stated that its caffeine content is within FDA guidelines, but Schumer appears more concerned about the marketing, noting that parents may believe they are getting a "juice" for kids, only to watch them become overstimulated after consuming Prime (the company also sells "Prime Hydration," which does not contain caffeine).
The timing is an unfortunate coincidence for Paul, who is no stranger to scandals. Currently, he's still being dogged by his apparent failure to refund investors into his failed NFT game CryptoZoo.
He is also possibly having a professional feud with wrestler Ricochet after he blamed the wrestler for blowing a key moment in the pair's Money in the Bank match, leading to what's known as a "botch" in wrestling terms.
