Paris is reeling from reports of a bed bug outbreak in the French capital, with one in 11 households reportedly having infestations of the menace and live bugs being spotted in public transportation, movie theaters and even hospitals.

News about the outbreak broke internationally just as Paris Fashion Week was drawing to a close, leading many online to fear that the outbreak could go international after participating members return to their home cities in America, Asia and the rest of Europe.

While some internet users took the news as a cue to share their own harrowing experiences with the critters, which are notoriously difficult to get rid of, other internet users took the opportunity to share memes and jokes about the situation, juxtaposing the idyllic romantic view many people have of Paris with its present bug-infested reality.

But just as news of the outbreak was gaining steam, some French people unearthed an old post from a French internet forum that claimed to have a clue as to the root of the Parisian outbreak.

Posted by an internet user who simply called himself "LePUNAISEURFOU" or "The Crazy Bug," the forum post delved into a man's plan to slowly mail and release bed bugs to different neighborhoods in France until there was a bed bug epidemic.

The poster claims to have collected and bred the bugs after capturing a few from an infected building in his neighborhood, going on to detail how he carefully seals them in envelops and ships them across the country, keeping track of which neighborhoods report more pest control needs to know if his plan is successful.

And if you ask the reason why this anonymous poster claims to have created a plan to terrorize France with a bed bug epidemic, his answer is simply that he hates France and French people with a vengeance and hopes to inflict as much psychic damage on them as he can. He also adds that through careful investments in pest control services, he also hopes to make some money off his wicked scheme.

While the question of whether this post is a well-timed joke that happened to come true or whether it truly speaks to an evil plot to infect France with the bed bug pestilence is presently unclear, French people and American onlookers have already begun sharing the story outside of the forum where it was posted.
