Yuu Buys a Cookie refers to a scene from 2019 anime Wataten!: An Angel Flew Down to Me in which character Yuu Matsumoto purchases a cookie from character Hana Shirosaki during a school play. Online, a three-panel image based on the scene has been used as an exploitable, primarily in the anime community.

Origin

On March 26th, 2019, twelfth episode "Angel's Gaze" of 2019 anime series Wataten!: An Angel Flew Down to Me (Watashi ni Tenshi ga Maiorita!), based on the 2016 manga of the same name, premiered in Japan.^[1] In one scene of the episode, character Yuu Matsumoto, who participates in a school play, purchases a cookie from a character played by Hana Shirosaki.

Spread

On March 31st, 2019, Facebook page Ken's Meme Shop posted the first known iteration of the meme. The post gained over 1,000 reactions and 2,900 shares in three weeks.^[2] On April 3rd, Reddit user JagerLongShot reposted the meme to /r/animemes subreddit.^[3]

In the week following the Ken's Meme Shop's post, the format gained significant popularity among Spanish-speaking users, with notable versions of the meme appearing in Paradise Anime,^[4] Thunder Geeks^[5] and other Facebook communities (examples shown below).

The spread of the meme among Spanish-speaking users was covered by Mundo ALV^[6] and Eldeforma.^[7]

On April 11th, Funnyjunk user pandienychta posted an English version of the meme which gained over 2,000 likes on the website (shown below, left).^[8] On April 13th, Redditor thtsprttygd uploaded a Thanos version of the meme to /r/animemes subreddit (shown below, right),^[9] gaining over 6,000 upvotes.

In the following days, multiple examples of the meme appeared on Reddit.
