*you're and *your and *it's and *its are captions used in reaction images and GIFs that parody the practice of attacking one's grammar (being a Grammar Nazi) as a way of winning internet arguments. The memes often utilize GIFs of a person walking away from an explosion as a humorous metaphor for instantly winning an argument upon pointing out a grammatical mistake.
Origin
On August 20th, 2020, Twitter[1] user @lemonlimebeats posted a GIF caption of a scene from a trailer for the 2019 animated film Spies in Disguise with the caption "*you're," implying that a person gains an instant advantage in an argument after pointing out the difference between "you're" and "your." The post (shown below) received over 20 retweets and 110 likes in nine months. Later on the same day, lemonlimebeats posted the GIF caption to iFunny,[2] where it received over 150 smiles in the same period.
Spread
On August 25th, 2020, Twitter[3] user @AurumCorpus reposted the GIF caption, with their post gaining over 5,900 retweets and 28,200 likes. In the reply section, Twitter[4][5] users @SteelersPogging and @illhumor posted a Supa Hot Fire GIF caption captioned in the same way (shown below), with this GIF possibly predating @lemonlimebeats' post.
On September 21st, 2020, Twitter[6] user @virtual_pi reposted the GIF caption as a video, with the post gaining over 148,800 views, 3,400 retweets and 22,100 likes.
Following the viral spread of the image, more similar GIF captions were posted by users online, particularly to Tenor for further use on Discord. For example, on September 2nd, 2020, Tenor[7] user shoob uploaded a captioned GIF of Tony Stark not looking at an explosion (shown below, left). On October 16th, 2020, Tenor[8] user MajutsuT posted another GIF caption (shown below, right).
In 2020 and 2021, multiple "*you're" and "*your" GIF captions were posted by users on Tenor, Twitter and other sites, with captions "*it's" and "*its" also seeing use. Additionally, the Spies in Disguise GIF saw use as a reaction GIF for Grammar Nazi replies.
