You’re Welcome is a song from the 2016 Disney animated film Moana. Online, the song grew into a popular vehicle for word replacement remixes on YouTube in late 2016, while a still image featuring character Maui paired with the quote "What can I say except "you're welcome?" has been used as a reaction and an image macro.

Origin

On November 23rd, 2016, Disney animated film Moana premiered in the United States.[1] In one scene of the film, demigod Maui performs song "You're Welcome" to the titular character Moana.

What can I say except "you're welcome?"

On December 8, 2016, YouTube[2] user Giddy N' Gleeful uploaded a word replacement remix of the video titled "You're Welcome but read the description". The video gained over 2.7 million views in three years.

Spread

Following the Giddy N' Gleeful's post, more word replacement remixes of "You're Welcome" appeared on YouTube. For example, on December 30th, 2016, YouTube[3] user TrulyWild posted an edit of the song which gained over 5.2 million views in three years. Another edit, posted by YouTube user Humaway on February 3rd, 2017, gained over 6.3 million views in the same period.[4]

Image Macro

In addition to remixes, an image featuring Maui saying "What can I say except "you're welcome"?" has been circulated online as a reaction and an image macro. On November 29th, 2016, Instagram user kingborch[5] made the earliest known post referencing the scene. The post gained over 480 likes in three years and was later reposted to Dankland Facebook community.[6][7]

In the following years, several variations of the image macro saw moderate use on Reddit and other platforms (examples shown below).
