You're Such a Dumb Animal, also known as Chad vs. Monkey, is a Wojak comic meme format in which Yes Chad calls an orangutan "a dumb animal," to which it responds with something that makes Yes Chad realize that in a certain way he is intellectually inferior. The format gained popularity on Reddit in early May 2021.

Origin

The Wojak comic depicting an interaction between Yes Chad and an orangutan initially gained popularity among Portuguese-speaking users on Facebook and Instagram in June 2020. On June 26th, Instagram^[1] page atumalacakkkkk posted the earliest found example of the meme, gaining over 1,100 likes in one year (shown below), although an earlier, non-ironic example is likely to exist.

Spread

In the following months, the format has been used as a "Things I Don't Like" meme by Portuguese users on Facebook, with the memes comparing bearers of various onions to talking monkeys. For example, on July 2nd, 2020, Facebook^[2] page Cavalo manco8000-A origekkk posted a meme that received over 1,400 reactions and 2,500 shares in one year (shown below, left). On July 19th, 2020, Facebook^[3] page Dormir não dá XP – RPG Brasil posted a meme that gained over 4,400 reactions and 760 shares (shown below, right). On September 17th, iFunny^[4] user IgorValenteBr reposted a version of the meme that received over 14,900 smiles on the app in nine months.

In late July 2020, the earliest known English version of the meme went viral, with posts on Reddit^[5][6] and iFunny^[7] (shown below, left). However, the format did not gain popularity among English-speaking users until April 28th, 2021, when Redditor^[8] paulolondra posted a four-panel version of the meme in which the orangutan proved to have more freedom by publicly masturbating. The post received over 22,900 upvotes in three months (shown below, right). On April 30th, 2021, Twitter^[9] user @terxme reposted the image, gaining over 240 retweets and 4,700 likes in three months.

On May 7th, 2021, Facebook^[10] page Ｅｓｏｔｅｒｉｃ 東方 Memes – 道/儒/佛 posted a six-panel meme that received over 3,400 reactions and 10,000 shares in three months. In the last panel, Withered Wojak replaces Yes Chad as he realizes his lack of freedom and inferiority.

On May 8th, Twitter^[11][12] users @LaborwaveCCCP and @godbringmepeace reposted the meme, with the posts gaining over 2,700 retweets and 17,500 likes and 37,100 retweets and 294,300 likes in three months. Also on May 8th, Redditor^[13] keroppinesh reposted the meme to the /r/memes subreddit, where it received over 20,800 upvotes in two months.

Following the viral spread of the post, in early May 2021 the six-panel You're Such a Dumb Animal version of the format gained viral popularity online, particularly on Reddit.
