You're Not Ascending to Godhood, You're Just Dehydrated is a series of memes, including animations and image macros, based on a viral Tumblr post and voiceover of said Tumblr post that reads, "you’re not ascending to godhood you’re just dehydrated." The post was made in October 2023 and voiced over by TikToker @bodgless the next month, inspiring animations using the voiceover.

Origin

On October 10th, 2023, Tumblr^[1] user Kalgalen posted, "you’re not ascending to godhood you’re just dehydrated," garnering over 140,000 notes in eight months. On October 11th, Tumblr^[2] user podcastwizard made two replies to the post, writing, "outta my way gayboy I'm boutta liberate my divine self from this mortal shell," then, "hopital," as if the person who thought they were ascending passed out (shown below).

Spread

The post was screenshotted and gained viral spread over the following days, also inspiring further memes. For example, on October 11th, 2023, X^[3] user @eisenbrave posted a version of the meme attaching images of Super Saiyan Trunks and Super Saiyan Rosé Goku to the post, garnering over 1,200 likes in eight months.

On October 12th, X^[4] user @_Zyzx_ posted a voiceover of the meme, garnering over 11,000 likes in the same span of time (shown below). On November 3rd, the original meme was posted to the subreddit /r/tumblr,^[5] garnering over 5,800 upvotes in seven months.

On November 13th, 2023, TikToker^[6] @bodgless posted a voiceover of the original meme, garnering over 1.4 million views in seven months (shown below, left). The original sound was used over 2,500 times over the following months, largely for animations based on the audio. One of the most viral examples was posted on December 8th by TikToker^[7] @worms._art, garnering over 1.7 million views in six months (shown below, right).

On January 8th, 2024, YouTuber^[8] Bean posted an animation based on @bodgless' voiceover that gained over 190,000 views in five months (shown below). On April 11th, X^[9] user @misophrioida posted a meme using the post as dialogue for several characters that gained over 800 likes in two months.

On June 20th, TikToker^[10] @fishbone.hotline posted an animatic using the voiceover that gained over 620,000 views in a day (shown below).
