It was first shared on iFunny but trended en masse on TikTok as the date approached. Many tried to decipher the cryptic meme's meaning on the date of, though answers varied wildly.

On February 3rd, 2022, iFunnyer[1] mthree03 posted a meme using Mematic that added a white, top caption reading, "You will understand this meme on November 23rd 2022," to an AliExpress product image of a woman in a bathtub with a cover over her, looking at her laptop. Over the course of nine months, the meme received roughly 23,400 smiles (shown below).

The meme was reposted to other platforms soon after, like Instagram[2] on February 24th, 2022, by the page dying___laughter, gaining over 400 likes in nine months. On May 18th, TikToker[3] dude.broke posted a video of himself with the meme, being the first known creator to mention it on the platform. His video received roughly 858,200 plays and 61,100 likes in six months (shown below, left). On July 24th, TIkToker[4] geraldonwudinjo posted a similar video, gaining roughly 409,000 plays and 26,800 likes in four months and resurfacing inquiries about the upcoming date once more (shown below, right).

On November 1st, 2022, TikToker[5] the_great_king62 posted the meme in a video that earned roughly 182,200 plays and 7,200 likes in 22 days (shown below, left). On November 22nd, TikToker[6] za.doppio inserted the meme underneath the xQc Despair video, reiterating that the world would finally know what the meme meant on the following day. The video received roughly 2.7 million plays and 295,300 likes in one day and inspired a viral discussion about what would happen on November 23rd and what the meme meant (shown below, right).

On November 23rd, 2022, multiple TikTokers posted the meme and gave humorous solutions to the meme's meaning or begged others to tell them its meaning.

The Fog Is Coming refers to a catchphrase and series of memes including image macros and TikTok videos that warn viewers that an ominous, assumedly dangerous fog is coming, sometimes offering a specific date of when and a location with GPS coordinates of where the fog is set to spread. The meme began as a tweet posted in November 2021 and spread across social media, particularly Instagram and TikTok, over the course of early 2022. The most notable, alleged date that the fog was coming was June 26th, 2022, reiterated in a video showing Krater the Smoking Caterpillar.
