The phrase, "You think you can hurt my feelings?" always starts these videos, followed by a specific instance that made them stronger. These videos typically use the "Disco" effect.

Origin

On August 5th, 2020, TikToker kenza_roo[2] uploaded a video set to "Bulletproof" featuring the on-screen caption, "Think you can hurt my feelings? My dad helped me with math homework at the kitchen table" (shown below). The video gained over 874 thousand views and 85 thousand likes in two months. This is one of the earliest instances of the trend.

Spread

The trend started to spread over the coming days. On August 6th, 2020, TikToker its.brynie[3] uploaded a version captioned, 'You think you can hurt my feelings? lol my best friend is the pretty one," garnering over 5.8 million views and 1.3 million likes in under two months (shown below, left). On August 7th, TikToker and Hype House member Alex French[4] uploaded a version of the trend, gaining over 4 million views and 777 thousand likes in under two months (shown below, right).

The trend continued to grow, hitting TikTok's trending page around August 8th. On August 10th, StayHipp published an article on the trend.[7] Celebrities, TV, and internet personalities started taking part in the trend as well, helping it skyrocket in popularity. On August 13th, the lead singer of Weezer, Rivers Cuomo,[5] uploaded a version of the trend, captioned, "Think you can hurt my feelings? I'm the lead singer of Weezer" (shown below, left). The video garnered over 2.5 million views in under two months. On August 15th, James Charles[6] uploaded a version of the trend, gaining over 26.4 million views and 5.5 million likes as of October 1st (shown below, right). On August 27th, TikTok featured the trend on their community page.[8]

As of October 1st, videos under the hashtag #hurtmyfeelings have garnered over 3.6 billion total views.
