Origin

On July 14th, 2020, TikToker maihualee uploaded the earliest known lipsync video using the audio "I Made a TikTok – Conscience & Ashtin Larold"^[1] and gained over 1.1 million likes in a month. The video uses the lyrics to add to a story about some boys in the TikToker's class.

Spread

On July 28th, 2020, TikToker grandmaann2 uploaded a popular example about being recognized in a Zumba class (shown below, left). The video garnered over three million likes in three weeks. The next day, TikToker itsimperial uploaded another variation captioned, "This happened at Walgreens today" (shown below, center). The video received over 1.7 million likes in three weeks. On August 7th, TikToker hailierosie uploaded a lipsync video and added a clothing change rather than a personal story (shown below, right). The video acquired over 2.9 million likes in a week.
