You Must Be X If You Think We Fuckin (originally You Must Be X If You Think We Fuckin) is a phrasal format used as a caption for images, with image being an exact match of the demanded condition. Spawned by a viral tweet in 2016, the snowclone has maintained its popularity since, used as an enabler format for posting any media.
Origin
While the exact origin of the format is unknown, the earliest discovered public post using the caption was made on October 8th, 2016, by Twitter[1] user @NotoriousCDW and mocked fans of the Houston Cougars basketball team. The first viral tweet[2] using the caption was posted by user @ThatGuyTmoney on October 20th, 2016. The post, which used an image of Ed from Ed, Edd n Eddie, gaining over 15,100 retweets and 18,100 likes in five years (shown below).
Spread
In late 2016, several versions of the meme based on the caption were posted online. For example, on November 27th, Twitter[3] user @Hotmailbling posted a still image from the 2003 film Radio paired with the caption. The post gained 10 retweets and 22 likes.
On April 19th, 2017, Twitter[4] user @suprememoist posted the earliest found version of the meme in which the caption was repurposed as a snowclone, with the image, representing @suprememoist, being the exact match for the condition provided by the other party (shown below).
After maintaining popularity through reposts in 2017, the format largely fell out of use in 2018 but regained popularity in 2019 with snowclone versions. For example, on February 24th, 2019, Twitter[5] user @uhhdamn posted a Paint Grandpa meme that gained over 20 retweets and 260 likes in two years. On April 14th, 2019, Twitter[6] user @Class posted a video caption meme that gained over 4,700 retweets, 19,600 likes and 359,900 views in two years (shown below).
More viral versions of the meme were posted in 2019, with the format maintaining moderate presence in memes in 2020 and 2021.
